Jews Want
Greek Backing
For Museum

Athens (JTA) — The Greek
Jewish community is angered
by the refusal of President
Chistos Sargetakis to sign a
government-approved decree
transforming the Jewish
Museum of Athens into a
foundation with tax-exempt
status, according to reports
last week.
But Jews here are incensed
mainly by the pretext given
by Sargetakis which seems to
equate Jewish citizens of
Greece with foreigners. He
returned the decree unsigned
with the excuse that if a
Jewish museum is allowed
foundation status, Bulgar-
ians and Turks living in
Greece will demand the same
treatment.
The museum, founded in
July, 1977, contains exhibits
covering nearly 2,000 years of
Jewish presence in Greece. It
is overseen by the Central
Jewish Board of Greece, an
umbrella organization of all
the Jewish communities in
the country.
At present, donations are
not tax-deductible which
makes it difficult for the
museum to raise funds in
Greece or in the United
States where there is an
Association of Friends of the
Greek Jewish Museum.
Greek law requires a Presi-
dential decree to change its
status.

Court Rejects
Officer's Appeal

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Supreme Court rejected an
appeal by former Israel
Defense Force officer Izat
Nafsu last Sunday to de-
classify the evidence and pro-
ceedings of a military tribu-
nal which sentenced him in
1981 to 18 years imprison-
ment for espionage and
treason.
A three-judge panel headed
by Chief Justice Meir
Shamgar met behind closed
doors to consider the appeal.
Shamgar said later that the
high court could not overrule
secrecy imposed by a military
tribunal. The legal grounds
for rejecting the appeal will
be published at a later date.
Nafsu, who lived in the Cir-
cassian village of Kafr Kam-
ma, has also appealed for a
reversal of his conviction
which the Supreme Court will
hear soon. He contends that
evidence against him was
fabricated and that illegal
methods were used to obtain
a confession.
