when it comes to human
rights in Rumania. "They've
been pulling the wool over the
Jewish community's eyes for
years," says one Jewish ac-
tivist familiar with the situa-
tion. "Every Western expert
agrees that this is a Stalinist
country. We shouldn't be re-
warding them for that kind of
repression."

Japanese Anti-Semitism

The Anti-Defamation
League of the B'nai B'rith
released a report last week
documenting the growing
problem of anti-Semitism in
Japan. The report, which in-
cludes information on the
tremendous popularity of in-
flammatory anti-Semitic
literature on Japan's best-
seller lists, coincided with the
visit to Washington by
Japanese Prime Minister
Yasuhiro Nakasone.
While officials of the ADL
had no direct contact with
Nakasone during his visit,
the report was "brought to
his attention on an informal
basis," according to one
source. Over the past few
months, ADL officials have
been meeting with represent-
atives of the Japanese gov-
ernment to express their
strong concern about the
problem and help develop
solutions. ADL represen-
tatives emphasize that Japan
does not have a tradition of
anti-Semitism. ❑

New Austrian Ambassador?

There are murmurings that
the ambassador to Washing-
ton from Austria, Thomas
Klestil, will be replaced soon.
Klestil, who was recalled to
Vienna for consultations in
the wake of the Waldheim af-
fair, has been named secre-
tary general of the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs, although
the Austrian embassy insists
that the appoinment is "on
hold" until the current dif-
ficulties between the two
countries are ironed out.
According to some reports,
the new ambassador will be
Fritz Hoess. Hoess is married
to a Jewish woman whom he
met in Tel Aviv. If Hoess does
become the next ambassador
to Washington, this fact may
represent an effort by the
Austrian government to seek
better relations with the
Jewish community here.
The Austrian embassy de-
clined to comment on the
rumor, except to say that
Hoess is one of the people
under consideration — and
that, at least officially, the
ambassador's post in not yet
vacant.
