science, of shunning responsi-
bility, looking away, keeping
mum. When the unspeakable
truth of the Holocaust then be-
came known at the end of the
war, all too many of us claimed
that they had not known any-
thing about it or even sus-
pected anything."
Second, beyond the question
of responsibility, is the ques-
tion of forgiveness. That is not
for us to decide. It is not for us
to forgive. Only the victims
have the right — the exclusive
right — to forgive. Our duty is
to remember. Our responsibil-
ity is never to stand by in si-
lence in the face of evil, and
thus to become accomplices by
our apathy. Our sacred obliga-
tion is to vow "never again."
Finally, it is for us to keep
faith with America's Founding
Fathers, who created a system
of governance which made the
state the servant of man rather
than man a servant to the
power and glory of the state. It
is for us to insist, as they did,
that government be subser-
vient to the law and that indi-
viduals and minorities alike be
protected from the intolerance
and oppression of abusive
majorities.
It is for us to be ever mindful
of Thomas Jefferson's admoni-
tion: "The time to guard
against corruption and
tyranny is before they shall
have gotten hold of us. It is bet-
ter to keep the wolf out of the
fold than to trust to drawing
his teeth and talons after he
shall have entered."
On this day of remembrance,
then, let us once again rededi-
cate ourselves to the American
faith that all men and women
are created equal; that they are
endowed by their Creator with
certain unalienable rights; and
that among these are life, lib-
erty, and the pursuit of happi-
ness. To preserve these rights
let us once again mutually
pledge to each other our lives,
our fortunes, and our sacred
honor.
