Joining in a national effort
launched recently, the Jewish
Community Council has begun
an information and advocacy
campaign aimed at opening the
United Nations war crimes
archives.
Almost 40,000 files dealing
with Nazi war criminals were
begun by the 17 member na-
tions of the U.N. War Crimes
Commission afer World War II.
When Kurt Waldheim was cam-
paigning for election as presi-
dent of Austria, the World
Jewish Congress discovered suf-
ficient evidence in his file to
raise serious questions about
his fitness for high office. After
receiving some material from
the war crimes commission
files, Israel requested U.N.
Secretary General Javier Perez
de Cuellar to open the entire
files to scholars, historians and
journalists. When Perez de
Cuellar asked the former war
crimes commission members
for permission to make the files
available, all but Australia

refused (including the United
States).
Support has been urged for
U.S. Senate Concurrent Resolu-
tion 41, entered to Sen. Daniel
Patrick Moynihan (D-N.Y.), call-
ing upon the U.S. to suppot a
policy of open access to the files
for interested individuals or
organizations.
The Jewish Community
Council recommends that
members of the community in-
form their U.S. senators and
representatives of their views
on the war crimes archives and,
in addition, communicate with
Secreatary of State George
Shultz and United Nations
Secretary General Perez de
Cuellar.
Addresses are: Sen. Carl
Levin or Sen. Donald Riegle,
U.S. Senate, Washington, D.C.
20510; your congressman, U.S.
House of Representatives,
Washington, D.C. 20515.

Jewish Community Council of-
fice, 962-1880.

40 Detroiters To Join
Tribute To Sherman

A contingent of more than 40
Detroiters will travel to New
York later this month to honor
Jane Sherman, who is among
16 recipients worldwide of the
1987 Ben-Gurion Centennial
Medal.
Ms. Sherman, the only female
honoree, is being cited as a
"Jewish leader of the next
generation" at the State of
Israel Bonds-sponsored event.
Ms. Sherman, who was
recently named co-chairman of
the 1987 Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, is national vice chair-
man of the United Jewish Ap-
peal and national chairman of
the UJA Project Renewal Com-
mittee. Earlier, she served as
the first chairman of the UJA
Young Women's National
Leadership Cabinet.
Aside from Ms. Sherman,
other honorees include Gary
Abramson of Washington, D.C.,
Michael Adler of Miami, Pierre
Aidenbaum of France, David
Alliance of United Kingdom,
Israel Feldman of Mexico,
Steven Grossman of Boston,
Martin Levine of Canada,
Richard Pearlstone of
Baltimore, Burton Resnick of
New York, Carl Rheuban of Los
Angeles, Ronald Rubin of
Philadelphia, David Shapira of
Pittsburgh, Martin Stein of
Milwaukee, Andrew Tisch of
New York and Abel Werthein of
Argentina.
The Israel Bond organiza-
tion's observance of the centen-
nary of David Ben-Gurion open-
ed in June of 1986. At that
time, 16 of world Jewry's most
prominent leaders of the post-

Jane Sherman

World War II generation were
awarded the Centennial In-
augural Medal at that event.
They included Max M. Fisher
of Detroit, Mrs. Sherman's
father.
David Hermelin, also of
Detroit, is international cam-
paign chairman for State of
Israel Bonds and is Ms. Sher-
man's co-chairman of the 1987
Allied Jewish Campaign.
Hermelin commented that
"Jane is a uniquely dedicated
and devoted community leader
who never asks anyone to do
what she would not do herself.
She sets high standards for
herself and the people around
her. A genuinely caring person,
she has a sense of destiny with
her people!'
