AND YOU THOUGHT old- fashioned movie showmanship was dead? . . . The Gate, a supernatural thriller from New Century/Vista, about three youths who accidentally stum- ble upon the "Gate to Hell:' will make its world debut May 13 for the citizens of Hell .. . The premiere will be one of a number of events originating from Hell, Michigan, a town of 300 souls located 50 miles west of Detroit. "The Gate" social calendar in Hell includes a pre-premiere barbecue at the Hell Creek Ranch (with devil's food cake for dessert), a satellite uplink from Devil's Den to 33 cities with cast and crew members from the special effects-laden film, a costume parade of various demons and lost souls, a national contest to win a trip to Hell and back and the premiere itself for the actual denizens of Hell. How are motion picture events like this initiated? .. . According to New Cen- tury/Vista, the idea was generated at a recent marketing meeting for The Gate where someone said, "Wouldn't it be nice if there was a real place called Hell?" . . . No sooner was an atlas cracked open than Hell was discovered . . . in Michigan . . . As the story goes, the town was originally going to be named Reevesville after a 19th Cen- tury mill owner named George Reeves who founded the village in the 1840s . . . When asked what he wanted to call the town, the preoccupied Reeves is reported to have said, "Call it Hell if you want to!" . . . And so Hell was born. The town is well-known to American weathermen who call to ask, "What's the temperature in Hell today?" . . . The town souvenir shop also does a brisk roadside business.
