Faith: When the heavens
wish to punish a man, they
take from him his faith.

Rabbi Israel Bael Shem Toy

History teaches us that
men and nations behave
wisely once they have
exhausted all other alter-
natives.

Abba Eban

irresistible: The irresis-
tible is often only that
which is not resisted.

Justice Louis Brandeis

Machines: One machine
can do the work of fifty
ordinary men. No machine
can do the work of one ex-
traordinary man.

Elbert Hubbard

Originality: Millions saw
the apple fall, but Newton
was the one who asked
why.

"Why do you tremble. Let
none of your wood (be
used in making my
handle), and not one of
you will be injured."

Rabbinic text

(Genesis Rabbah, 5:10)
Self-Righteousness: You
are not as good as you
think you are. And the
world is not as bad as you
think it is.

Rabbi Wolf of Strikov

Serenity: A Jewish
legend tells that King Sol-
omon once approached a
jeweler with an unusual
request. He asked that the
man design a ring on
which would be inscribed
words that would be true
and appropriate at all
times and in all situations.
The jeweler brought the
king a ring on which was
inscribed, "This too shall
pass." In times of pain, the
king looked at the ring and
was reassured. In times of
joy and exultation the king
looked at the ring and felt
sobered.
Slavery: If slavery is not
wrong, nothing is wrong.

Abraham Lincoln

(April 4, 1864)
Statistics: A dog run
over by a car upsets our
emotional balance ...
Three million Jews killed
in Poland causes but a
moderate uneasiness.
Statistics don't bleed: it is
the detail which counts.

Arthur Koestler

("On

rocities,"
in The Yogi and the Com-
misar

Such is the wealth of mater
gathered by Telushkin for his
informative work. It is a col-
lection of much common
sense sprinkled with non-
sense and entertaining say-
ings. His arduous task that
surely needed much patience
to assemble earns him
acclaim.

Bernard Baruch

Poverty: When a poor
man eats chicken, one of
them is sick.

Yiddish proverb

Sabbath: The Sabbath is
what you make of it — a
holy day, a holiday, a rest
day, a sports day — or, if
you're not smart, another
work day.

Rabbi Herbert Goldstein

Self-Alienation: What
have I in common with
other Jews? I have hardly
anything in common with
myself and should stand
very quietly in a corner,
content that I can breathe.

Franz Kafka

(Diaries)
Self-Destructiveness:
When iron was created the
trees began to tremble.
The iron said to them:

Anti-Terrorism
Law Passed

Atlanta (JTA) — It is now
illegal to teach, train or
demonstrate the use of
dangerous weapons and exp-
losives in connection with a
civil disorder, riot or insur-
rection in Georgia.
Gov. Joe Frank Harris
signed into law last month a
bill that would mandate a
maximum fine of $5,000 and
one-to-five years' imprison-
ment for those convicted of
this so-called terrorist train-
ing. Georgia is the 15th state
to adopt such a law, based on
a model bill prepared by the
Anti-Defamation League of
B'nai B'rith, according to the
agency.
