It is committed to the values of religious pluralism and op- poses religious coercion by a minority, who have used their role as the balance of power in both Likud and Labor govern- ments to impose their religious views on the majority of Israel's citizens. It is committed to the full recognition of the Jewish status of Ethiopian olim. Must fundamentally, it is committed to supporting those Israelis who are fighting against the anti-democratic and racist trends in Israeli society that are endangering Israeli democracy. COME SEE OUR RENOVATION NOW IN PROGRESS 14 Friday, May 8, 1987 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS On Wednesday, April 8, 1987, the Vaad received a call from an undisclosed source, notifying them that five cases of non- kosher briskets were being delivered to Franklin Kosher Meat Market in West Bloom- field. Rabbi Chazkel Grubner called Mr. Leon Steinmetz, the designated mashgiach (super- visor) of that place of business, and asked him to repair there immediately to check this out. -Mr. Steinmetz arrived on the scene and found the treife briskets. The following day, Thursday, April 9, 1987, the store's two butchers were brought before the Council of Orthodox Rabbis to explain their actions. The Vaad kept silent concerning this whole affair for almost a month, taking no action, mak- ing no announcements, active- ly engaged in a massive coverup of this betrayal of the Jewish community. This is striking in view of the fact that in March of 1981, on the basis of an empty box, the Vaad removed certification from the New Orleans Kosher Meat Market. In July of 1986, on the basis of sheer innuendo and idle speculation, they removed certification from Ber- nard & Son of West Bloomfield. In both cases, the action was swift. Announcements were made in all the shuls. Posters were placed everywhere. Paid announcements were placed in The Jewish News and, in the latter case, bearded pickets paraded in front of the store, immediately following the alleged "discoveries" of im- propriety. In this latest in- stance, five full cases of treife briskets were found. Yet, the Vaad engaged in an elabaorate Franklingate coverup, and its ultimate resolve was bizarre at best. The Vaad announced in the May 1 issue of The Jewish News that one of the butchers, Mr. Burg, was retiring volun- tarily from the kosher meat business, but Mr. Barden was staying on, business as usual, but with a resident mashgiach, a former butcher himself, one Leonard Rosenberg. This is an outrage to the Jewish community. Kashruth is not baseball! In this game, one strike and you're out! Five full cases of non-kosher briskets were brought into the store. This shows a total disregard for Jewish Law and for the Jewish community. Who knows how long this has been going on while this place was under jurisdiction of the Vaad? There are Jews in this com- munity, both Orthodox and Conservative and perhaps even some Reform, who are strongly committed to Judaism and the Jewish way of life. An impor- tant aspect of the Jewish lifestyle is an absolute guarantee of kashruth in the marketplace. In the past, many people have put their trust in the Vaad, but now it is apparent that that confidence was wasted. Unless the Vaad reverses its stand and ousts the butcher who has betrayed us, it will stand in its shame, condemned. Rabbi Jack Goldman West Bloomfield No Easy Answers For Soviet Jews I must commend the Jewish News for the article "Let My People Go - But Where?" by Elsa Solender (May 1). It was a fine work; she wrote about a complex emotional and generally misunderstood sug- gestion, (and) helped to clarify it by presenting a balanced, well researched and unbiased report. While there will be those who disagree with it, any controver- sy will mirror the varied opi- nions of Soviet -Jews and those who work for their release. It is complex and there are no easy answers.
