Synagogues are still- sup-
posed to be houses of worship,
and the rabbi is supposed to
be a spiritual leader. Even in
the best environment, some
will choose to play the power
games. But a changed
environment would certainly
go a long way in attracting
and keeping more and better
rabbis, and fewer imitations
of ward politicians and game
show hosts.

Black Hebrews
Interrupt Wiesel

A group of Black Hebrews
burst into a Washington uni-
versity auditorium recently'
where author Elie Wiesel wa s
speaking and demanded the
podium. Unfazed, the Nobel
laureate said, "Anyone who
wants to speak about his suf-
fering , should be heard."
The demonstrator spoke
briefly and thanked Wiesel.
His group then returned to
picketing outside the George
Washington University hall,
where they carried placards
charging the Israeli govern-
ment with abusing members
of their sect. Recently, Black
Hebrews have also inter-
rupted Jewish and pro-Israel
meetings in Washington and
demonstrated in front of the
synagogues, Jewish offices
and Soviet Jewry vigils.

S. African Jews
`At Crossroads'

Johannesburg (JTA) — The
South African Jewish com-
munity stands at a moral
crossroads, according to Prof.
Michael Katz, newly elected
president of the South Africa
Jewish Board of Deputies, the
central organization of the
South African Jewish corn-
munity.
The battle over apartheid
seemed to be the unmen-
tioned theme at the Board's
biennial 34th National Con-
gress held April 4.
"Today more than ever we
must recognize the tides of
great change," said Mockie
Friedman, chairman advocate
of the South Africa Zionist
Federation. "The Jewish
community must be prepared
and ready to ride them ... In
South Africa today, where
perceptions of peace and sur-
vival are- conditional by the
polarization between whites
and non-whites, the Jewish
community because of its
special unique character has
an added degree of vulnera-
bility."
