Sinai Hospital
Trimming 150 Jobs

A drop in numbers of patients
and insurance payments are cited

Staff Report

Declining admissions and reduc-
tions in federal and state insurance
reimbursements have prompted Sinai
Hospital to announce its first ever
layoff of employees.
Hospital spokeswoman Suzanne
Timma said this week that effective
May 21, 105 permanent and 20 tem-
porary positions are being eliminated
with an additional 25 positions
changing from full- to part-time
status. The affected employees were

notified Wednesday and Thursday.
Ms. Timma said that Sinai, which
opened in 1953, has approximately
3,000 employees and never before had
to reduce its work force in this
manner.
The staff reductions are one com-
ponent of an overall cost reduction
program aimed at closing an
estimated $20 million gap between
projections of revenues and expen-
ditures. Sinai officials declined to
