Secondly, he recom- mends doing things that will create more energy: relax, eat the right foods, exercise and have a good attitude. "Obvi- ously, the more areas in which you relieve the stress, the better." Of never married, widowed or divorced singles, it is di- vorced who suffer the greatest stress, Goren said. He explained that as people have negative experiences, they tend to put bricks in front of them, saying "I'm not going to let that happen to me again." After a while, people don't want to get burned anymore and they start building walls. "People who have been through the more negative experiences (divorce) tend to have the higher walls. The ones with the biggest walls in front of them are the ones who have been married and divorced." What can people do to re- lieve themselves of stress? They should try to create a positive environment for themselves, Goren advocates. This can be done, he said, by asking "What do we really want out of life. Then we'd sit down and ask, 'What can we do to make this environment more positive?' The third thing is putting them (these ideas) into effect. "You sit and talk about things and that's great, but until something happens, nothing's going to change. And so the third thing we do is we figure out — prioritize — the changes that are needed and figure out ways of putting those changes into ef- fect." Ultimately, Goren said, everyone wants the same things out of life: "being happy, feeling productive and feeling good about ourselves: To do that we have to keep our lives in balance. "We need balance. Our emotional life needs to be balanced. We need to take time to see where we need to put our lives back in bal- ance." The way to do that, Goren said, is "to constantly review our lives and make changes. "We CAN change ourselves and can make our experi- ences positive and happy." ❑ HEALTH all jewelry *including sterling IMAGES IN VOGUE VOGUE PLAZA 1919 S. Facial exercise can and does work, but you have to be extremely careful about who you choose to advise you. I have studied lots of books on so-called facial exercise or wrinkle removal and most aren't worth the paper they're printed on. My program of facial exer- cise was developed over a ten-year period of extensive research and testing. Along the way, dermatologists, plas- tic surgeons, ophthamologists, skin care specialists were consulted and time was spent in the anatomy lab. Every doctor, including my own father (an ear, nose and throat specialist) told me I was wasting my time. I could see that there were problems Carol Ewing, president of Facial Fitness, Inc. with facial exercise but it also seemed that they could be solved. In this case, perseverance has paid off. Recently, I was granted approval for a patent covering a method of facial exercise, which instructs people how to lift, tone, and tighten their facial muscles and as a result look younger and more attractive. What are some of the myths surrounding facial exercise? Myth 1: Facial Exercises Don't Work. Jane Fonda says in her book, Women Coming of Age, "Every time we chew, smile or talk it's a regular facial workout. If exercising these muscles helped eliminate wrinkles, we'd all be smooth as babies." It's a lot more complicated than that. The answer to re- moving signs of aging from the surface of the face lies in knowing how the facial mus- cles are supposed to fit to- gether, how each one works, what happens to the muscles in the aging process and most ( N
