U.S. Bars All Visits
By Austria's Waldheim

Washington (JTA) — The
Reagan Administration an-
nounced last Monday that
Austrian President Kurt
Waldheim has been placed on
the Justice Department's
watch list barring the
onetime Secretary General of
the United Nations from
entering the United States.
The announcement was
made separately by both the
Justice and State Depart-
ment which said the Justice
Department has "determined
a prima facie case of ex-
cludability exists" against
Waldheim.
"This determination was
based on United States law
forbidding entry to any
foreign national who assisted
or otherwise participated in
activities amounting to
persecution during World
War II," the statement said.
The World Jewish Congress
first made public in March,
1986, charges that Waldheim

participated in the massacre
of civilians in Yugoslavia in
1942 while serving in the
Austrian army.
Waldheim, who was in-
augurated as President of
Austria last July, has denied
the charges, although he has
admitted being in the area.
State department spokes-
man Charles Redman took
pains to stress that the action
was not aimed officially at an
Austrian President. He said
the decision was based on
Waldheim's "past activities"
as "an individual."

Currency Rules

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Treasury and Bank of Israel
announced April 23 an easing
of foreign currency restric-
tions for Israelis. Starting
immediately, Israelis travel-
ing overseas may take $2,000
per person in U.S. currency.
