THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

YOU MIGHT CALL IT a
double-header victory in
dinner-theater ... as Jimmy
Launce PROductions and
culinary artist Matt Prentice
combine talents to bring a
Somerset Dinner-Theater
highly superlative than any
yet presented at the West Big
Beaver locale of beautiful
Somerset Mall.
Gourmet sitdown dining
and professional entertain-
ment amid a "new look" at-
mosphere make for a grand
evening.
The original concept of
dinner theater was to give af-
fordable dining with afforda-
ble entertainment ... Many
presenters have failed either
in one category or in both ...
As a result, dinner theater is
a premier presentation ...
and when offered properly ...
one of the best bargains
around.
This is what has been pro-
moted with Somerset Dinner
Theater ... A complete eve-
ning of fine dining and
entertainment here has be-
come major Friday and
Saturday evening attractions.
As example ... persons can
dine at Matt's Cafe Jardin in
Somerset Mall ... then take
to the lower level and see a
wonderful show ... both for
$22.95 ... or a magnificant
meal in elegant Sebastian's
in Somerset Mall and a
Jimmy Launce PROduction
for $29.50 ... If folks have
already eaten, they can see
the show for $10.50.
My latest visit to Somerset
was a thorough winner.
6:15 dinner reservations
were at Sebastian's ... with
its large, beautiful murals,
glass galore, both frosted and
clear and so many outstand-
ing features that make
Sebastian's one of Metropoli-
tan Detroit's finest dining
spots ... The tuxedo'd and
formally-dressed staff sat us
at an elegant booth with
white linen-clad marble ta-
bles ... This certainly was
dining that had come a long
way from the bountiful
dinner-theater buffet of days
gone by ... with its "cattle
herding" hurriedness as
others reached for extra help-
ings of too much vittles with-
out class ... But I really
shouldn't say that ...
Dinner-theater with buffet
dining does have some class
... very low.
Sebastian's new decor is so
fresh and striking, one could
easily forget that it was ever
anything but Sebastian's ...
Alfred's? ... No Way! ... Yet
that's what it once was ...
and so very, very hard to be-
lieve.
The most difficult part of
the evening was choosing

among the vast entree selec-
tion array ... Truly a gour-
met diner's dilemma ... My
entree of poached salmon was
among the finest I have ever
had ... Jimmy had the same
and his beautiful, sweet wife,
Brigitte, enjoyed a Melange
of Seafood.
Brigitte remarked, "I eat
with my eyes" in exclamation
about the excellent presenta-
tion ... Our dinners were not
skimpy by any means ... no
trendy sampling of portions
... Included in our meal was
a cold, crisp chef's salad,
fresh vegetable, double-baked
potato and wide variety of
breads and rolls ... all baked
on the premises in Sebas-
tian's own bake shop.
Moving on to the fun half
of our filled evening, we pro-
ceeded to the theater in
Somerset Mall's lower level
... to sit back on comfortable
chairs at tables and enjoy the
production of It Had To Be
You ... Regardless of the
special attention warranted
by attending the theater with
producer Jimmy Launce and
assistant producer Brigitte
Launce, I noticed that not
only did we have the best
seat in the house ... but so
did everyone else! ... This is
how Somerset Dinner-
Theater in the lower level is
now laid out ... The room's
intimacy ... 150 capacity ...
and ideal set-up provided all
attendees with a birds-eye
view of actors Joseph Haynes
and Somerset veteran actress
Mary Whiting.
The hilarious comedy It
Had To Be You is typically
indicative of the high caliber
entertainment provided by
Jimmy Launce PROductions
. always recipient of a very
positive audience response
... After numerous pre-
sentations, I can honestly say
that I have yet to be bored or
insulted with a production of
theirs ... never off-color or
off-beat . Off-Broadway,
perhaps but that's as far as
they get.
Written by the comedy
team of Joseph Balogna and
Renee Taylor, It Had To Be
You is the story about a
"down on her luck" actres-
s`playwright and her dream
man, a successful New York
producedirector of commer-
cials.
Mary Whiting is her effer-
vescent self ... and gives a
sparkling performance as ac-
tress Theda Blau ...
enthusiastically pursuing the
little pranks involved in get-
ting producer Vito Pignoli,
keenly played by Joseph
Haynes, to fall in love with
her ... It is refreshing and
warm, just the kind of night-
cap an evening like this calls

for ... a romance that is as
tender and warm as it is wild
and wacky.
Jimmy Launce PROd-
uctions has an enviable 12-
year history of successful
productions ... but above all,
the quality of evening for dol-
lars spent is hard to beat ...
a gourmet sitdown dinner
and fine entertainment at
one location and one price.
During the afterglow, when
the cast comes out to greet
the audience, I had a chance
to peruse the newly-
remodeled theater ... Var-
ious shades of gray give the
room a warm, airy and com-
fortable setting ... Appropri-
ately decorating the walls are
fascinatng photos of movie
stars.
In keeping with all the re-
novations at Somerset Mall,
Sebastian's and Somerset
Dinner-Theater have set the
precedent for more good
things to come.
