The Probus Club, which is granting the awards, is an organization of Jewish pro- fessional businessmen, estab- lished in 1939. In addition to the annual WSU awards, initiated to bring recognition to the achievements of younger fa- culty, the club contributes gifts and grants to individual Detroit hospitals and charities. The club has also provided financial assistance for the college education or more than 100 students and is cur- rently sponsoring a Probus Apartment Club for the Jewish Association of Re- tarded Citizens, providing an opportunity for independent living. Dr. Howard Petty Two Wayne State Univer- sity professors will receive the 25th annual Probus Club Awards for Academic Achievement. The winners of the awards for 1987 are: Dr. Donald P. Haase of Redford, associate professor of Romance and Germanic languages; and Dr. Howard R. Petty of Livonia, associate professor of biologi- cal sciences. The awards, granted an- nually to WSU faculty in the fields of the humanities and natural sciences, offer $1,000, without restrictions, and Pro- bus Club plaques of recogni- tion. Presentations will be made at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Furniture Club. Dr. Haase received the President's Award for Excel- lence in Teaching at WSU in 1985. He was made a Charles P. Taft Fellow at the Univer- sity of Cincinnati in 1972- 1973. A faculty member at WSU since 1981, Dr. Haase earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees at the University of Cincinnati. He received a Ph.D. degree from the University of North Carolina. Dr. Petty is a Fellow of the Damon Runyon-Walter Win- chell Cancer Fund. Dr. Petty joined the faculty at WSU as an assistant pro- Dr. Eric Pfeiffer, professor of psychiatry and director of the Suncoast Gerontology Center at the University of South Florida Medical Center in Tampa, will speak on "Grandparents and Grandchildren: Each Other's Treasure" at Sinai Hospital of Detroit on Monday. The talk, the fourth annual Esther B. Chapnick Memorial Lecture, begins at 7:30 p.m. in Sinai's Zuckerman Au- ditorium. Dr. Pfeiffer's talk will stress the grandparents' ef- fect upon grandchildren and the interaction between these two extended generations. Dr. Pfeiffer is an interna- tionally recognized authority on health and aging. He is author of several major books on the psychiatry of old age and long-term care. A reception will follow Dr. Pfeiffer's presentation in Sinai's Zuckerman Dining Room.
