An Invitation To
Our Clients!

Adds Diana Blauer, "What
I would like to stress to
everyone who might give
blood is that confidentiality is
guarded completely. On the
premises, every donor is
asked to read a pamphlet
about AIDS and answer an
anonymous form. If, for some
reason, a donor thought his
blood might be ineligible —
that he or she might be car-
rier of any infectious disease
— he could call the following
day, mention his number and
that blood would undergo
extra testing. Every donation,
I might add, is rigorously
tested these days."
Sklar comments that more
men gave blood in the past
and the number of female
volunteers has also dwindled,
a result of increased numbers
of women working and
spreading themselves be-
tween professions and family
life. "I can still, a week be-
fore a drive, get an adequate
number of volunteers, but it
isn't the way it used to be —
a social as well as a
humanitarian outlet."
Up until the 1970s, the
widespread policy of blood
banks dictated that if you or
a loved one received a blood
transfusion, the blood had to
be replaced or paid for.
"That program posed many
difficulties," explains Paula
Scheuer. "The Red Cross dis-
covered the elderly part 'of
the population was using
blood more frequently, but
was often in tight financial
circumstances. Unhappily,
many of their friends and
loved ones — potential donor
replacements — had died or
were themselves too ill to
contribute. So the community
coverage system, where any-
one needing blood could ob-
tain it without strings at-
tached, was initiated."
Although - that policy
change took some pressure off
the population, it created new
urgencies. According to
Scheuer, the Southeastern
Michigan American Red
Cross supports a 70-hospital
area in Wayne, Oakland,
Macomb, Washtenaw and St.
Clair counties.
"We've calculated we need
a minimum of 1,000 new
pints a day on hand to sup-
port that physical area. Last
December, around the holi-
days, our need for '0' blood —
the universal donor — was a
consistent supply of 800
pints. At times we had as lit-
tle as 100."
Diana Blauer realizes the
average person may not be
aware of the quotas, but says
sophisticated knowledge
shouldn't be the only reason
to give.
She's also quick to point
out that having' once been
anemic does not disqualify a
potential donor. She person-
