discriminate, premeditated
murder of Jewish men, women
and children on a par with war
victims or selective detainees is
to make another Holocaust as
acceptable and perhaps as
predictable as war and its
historic by-products. In the
final analysis, universalization
of the Holocaust is another
form for its rationalization.
This we dare not permit.
The Holocaust was a unique-
ly Jewish tragedy. The Final
Solution, consisting of painful
ghettos, mobile killing opera-
tions, mass deportations, ovens,
gassing of infants and children,
was planned for the Jews only.
As if to rationalize their un-
precedented atrocities against
the Jews, Nazi Germany later
included the gypsies in some of
their atrocities. No other people
in Europe were subjected to
total extermination. There
were political prisoners that
were detained in camps and in
a few cases even executed.
Those crimes by Nazi Germany
against their political op-
ponents were not much dif-
ferent than the persecution of
political opponents by other
totalitarian and dictatorial
systems.
It is a distinct disservice to
the story and lessons of the
Holocaust to lump together the
victims of the Holocaust with
Nazi Germany's political vic-
tims. The envisioned U.S.
Holocaust Center in
Washington, D.C. plans to count
as the victims Ukrainians and
others under the same roof with
our Jewish murdered brethren.
In so doing it removes the uni-
queness of the Holocaust and
places it within the ranks of
historic political persecutions
and its recurrence likely.
The consciousness that the
Holocaust has no parallel in
history is of critical social-
psychological importance in
order to prevent another
Holocaust.

Egypt Closes
PLO Offices

Algiers — In response to
harsh criticism from the
Palestine Liberation Organiza-
tion during the Palestine Na-
tional Council meeting last
week, Egypt on Monday closed
PLO offices in Cairo and
Alexandria.
Surprised PLO leaders accus-
ed the United States and Israel
of pressuring Egypt to close the
offices, but Egypt's Foreign
Minister Esmat Abdel-Meguid
said that Egypt was simply ac-
ting "to put an end to this in-
solence" by its PLO critics.
The PNC passed a resolution
demanding that Egypt re-
nounce the Camp David Ac-
cords. Egypt is the second pro-
Western Arab country to close
its PLO offices. Jordan did the
same last July.
