Crowley's

Yom Haatzmaut Dinner
Planned For Temple Kids

Temple Emanu-El Reli-
gious School's third grade
will have a special Shabbat
dinner at 6 p.m. May 1 in
celebration of Yom
Haatzmaut. The dinner will
be held at the temple.
Teachers Donna Brennan
and Gail Gilman have
worked for weeks preparing
the students in their studies
of Israel. The PTO organized
the dinner, chaired by Gail
Zimmerman and Sherry Rose.
Family Shabbat services will
follow at 7:30 p.m.
On May 3, the sixth grade
and their families will par-
ticipate in a luncheon pre-
pared by Leslie London and
Carolyn Silverstein. Sixth
grade teachers are Bette
Ross, Lisa Padzensky and
Judy Schreiber. A dinner for
temple-affiliated Michigan
State University students
will be held in East Lansing.
The annual Tzedakah pro-
gram of the religious school
will take place May 10. Each
grade researches an organiza-
tion or charity and makes a
presentation to the rest of the
students. Students will break
into groups to decide where

to donate the money collected
through the year.
The religious school faculty
will have a potluck luncheon
and evaluation meeting at
11:30 a.m. May 17 at the
temple.
There will be no classes
May 24. An Israeli fair on
May 31 will end the school
year. It will include an
awards ceremony at 11:15
a.m.

Environmental
Youth
Awards" program to include
awards and recognition at the
national level.

Propaganda Expert Here
For Community Forums

"Propaganda — Terrorism
of the Mind: How to Live
With It, How to Counter It"
will be the theme of a public
forum May 5 at 7:30 p.m. at
the main Jewish Community
Center.
The speaker will be Dr.
Baruch Gitlis, senior lecturer,
department of psychology,
Bar-Ilan University and di-
rector of the Harry Karren
Institute for Propaganda
Analysis in Jerusalem.
Dr. Gitlis has been produc
ing documentary and infor-
mational films since the
mid-1970s for Israel Televi-
sion, Israel's Ministries of
Foreign Affairs and Immig-
rant Absorption, the Museum
of the Diaspora and the
World Organization of Jews
from Arab Lands.
Before taking up his post
at Bar-Ilan University, Dr.
Gitlis taught at the Univer-
sity of Southern California.
In 1981 when the Karren In-
stitute — the only study-
center for propaganda
analysis in the world — was
founded, he was invited to
become its director.
Dr. Gitlis's presentation
will include video-taped
filmclips produced by the
PLO, Syria and the U.S.S.R.
Dr. Gitlis' appearance in

man Institute for Mideast
Research and Information of
the Zionist Organization of
America.
The public forum is co-
sponsored by Detroit Friends
of Bar-Ilan University, the
Jewish Community Center of
Metropolitan Detroit and the
Metro Detroit District,
Zionist Organization of
America. The community is
invited and admission is free.
The same day at noon, Dr.
Gitlis will address the Eins-
tein Luncheon Forum at
Southfield Charley's restaur-
ant in Southfield.
