Rochelle Broder and
Jeremy Wolfe will share their
bat and bar mitzvah, respec-
tively, with Slavva
Grechishkin of Leningrad,
USSR, at Shabbat services 9
a.m. Saturday at Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
Slavva is the son of Leonid
and Olga Grechishkin. His
father is a physician who was
a senior researcher in the
pharmaceutical division of
the Institute of Experimental
Medicine, in charge of a lab-
oratory developing new
medicines.
The family, along with
Grechishkin's mother, applied
in September 1979 to join his
mother's sister in Israel.
They were refused repeatedly
on the grounds that they did
not have proof of their rela-
tionship. In fact, the docu-
ments the authorities de-
manded to prove the relation-
ship were destroyed by the
Nazis during World War II,
in Byelorussia.
Grechishkin served ten
years in the Gulag from 1945
until 1954 for "anti-Soviet
agitation and propaganda,"
being released under
Khrushchev, but he said he
believes that his former im-
prisonment is a major obsta-
cle to his family's emigration.
When Grechishkin's em-
ployers leaned that he had
received an invitation from
Israel, he was immediately
fired from his job. All his
work had been non-classified;
he has published over 80 ar-
ticles, of which about 30 have
been published in the West.
Under the continual strain
of repeated refusals,
Grechishkin's mother passed
away, without seeing her sis-
ter again. The Grechishkins
have sent protests and appe-
als to the emigration
authorities to allow them to
be united with their family in
Israel, all to no avail.
