WINE MAKERS AND
marketing representatives
from six of California's hot-
test premium wineries will
come to Detroit to pour and
discuss their wines at a wine
tasting and dinner, May 3, in
the Charley's Crab -restaur-
ant in Troy.
Eighteen wines in the very
affordable price range of $8
to $16 per bottle will be
poured at tables in three
different locations of the
lower and upper levels.
Accompanying food tables
will have salmon mousse,
bluefish pat'e, smoked lake
trout, Chuck Muer's in-
house-cured Gravalox, oysters
and clams, as well as a wide
selection of cheeses, fruits
and breads.
The wineries will represent
Napa, Lake County, Santa
Barbara and Alexander
regions of California .
which have been growing
steadily in popularity and are
likely to "take off" dramati-
cally this year, since foreign
wines are increasing in price
with the decline of the dollar.
The wines tasted will be
made availabe, by the bottle
or case, at special prices to
those attending the event.
One wine, the Fum'e Blanc
from Konocti, received a gold
medal in a tasting of all gold
medal wines sponsored by
Wine & Spirits magazine and
reported in their January
1987 issue.
Another wine to be poured,

the 1984 Oakville Estate
Chardonnay from Franciscan,
received a 90 score in Wine
Spectator magazine, February
1987, and sells for under $10.
Reservations at the five-
course, wine makers dinner
are limited to 50 people and
four or five tables, since a
wine maker or representative
must host each table, says
Chuck ... Cost is $50 per
person, including wine . . .
and will start at 3:30 p.m. ...
Food served at the dinner
will include some new, up-
scale entrees being intro-
duced at Charley's Crab for
the first time.
The tasting, 1:30 to 3:30
p.m., is priced at $15 per per-
son and includes a personal
sommelier's cup to keep.
NOVI HILTON EM-
PLOYEES will give up
smoking next Wednesday ...
It's in conjuction with Ameri-
can Lung Association ... and
donations from money typi-
cally spent on cigarettes as
well as other pledges will be
donated to Camp Sun Deer in
Battle Creek for asthmatic
disorders.

Readers Theater
At Jewish Center

The Institute for Retired
Professionals of the Jewish
Community Center will pre-
sent a Readers Theater at 4
p.m. May 3 in the DeRoy
Studio Theater at the main
Jewish Center. Refreshments
will be served at 3:15 p.m.
Inspired by a New York
series, the Readers Theater
revives the traditional art
form of short story reading.
Professional actors select and
read favorite short stories
which have relevance to the
Jewish community.
Appearing- on May 3 are:
Harry Goldstein, Evelyn Or-
bach, Liz and Rube Weiss
and Paul Winter. Melba
Winer will be the hostess.
Stories to be read include:
The Guest by Sholem
Aleichem, Angel Levine by
Bernard Malamud, The
Woman Who Lived for Ten by
Broner and the Tales of
Chelm.
Tickets are limited, and are
available at the main build-
ing and Jimmy Prentis Mor-
ris Branch.
A second program is
planned for June 7.

Walk For Hunger
To Help Needy

Pledge sheets are being cir-
culated in Oakland County
for the May 2 Lighthouse
"Walk for Hunger" to raise
money for local needy
families.
Pledge sheets are available
at the Lighthouse office,
335-2462.
