DANNY RASKIN

A RESTAURANT or
night club is only as good as
the people who operate it ...
In many instances, food is of
secondary importance when
dining ... Even mediocre
entertainment at niteries can
sometimes be overlooked.
Reputation, however, has a
way of lingering ... when it
is not given attentive altera-
tion.
This was the case with the
former Kansas City Steak
House, now known as BBC
Steak House . . . on W. 14
Mile Rd. just east of 1-75 and
Oakland Mall.
It is a complete new
ballgame now ... with cus-
tomer satisfaction being
among the prime interests
... one of the things lacking
before.
BBC Steak House has be-
come a "new discovery" for
folks who like to dance, have
fun and perhaps enjoy some
intimate dining.
As example, The Loving
Cup trio of Marlene Hill,
Danny Jordan and Dan
Mayer are there Tuesdays
through Saturdays ... This
highly-regarded and very
versatile group remains
among the premier musical
outfits of our area ... Mar-
lene with her excellent voc-
alizing, hubby Danny on the
piano and digital sequencer
with its "sideman" rhythms
of bass, drums, etc. ... and
Dan strumming a fine lead
guitar.
Evening manager Ricky
(Drapkin) Dee is mainly
noted for his booking talents
with the Lorio-Ross Agency,
as a singer ... and songwri-
ter, also (he wrote "Devil In
Her Heart" for The Beatles.)
... However, Ricky has an-
other hidden talent people
are quickly beginning to find
out about ... He knows how
to host and manage a place
. and is a stickler for good
service ... This is important
... very much so ... and one
of the major reasons why.
BBC Steak House is overcom-
ing the previous stigma
created by its predecessors.
My waitress, for example,
very efficient, smiling, sweet
and personable Wendy Brac-
ken, did all the right things
in presentation of our broiled
trout dinner almondine,
which, incidentally, was quite
delicious.
At another station, Debbie
Tollzien was showing her
waitperson abilities with
courteous efficiency ... Bar-
gal Joyce Kachman was mak-
ing friends ... and barlassie
Dee Howard, with 18 years
experience at the same locale
and four different owners,
plied her usual know-how
traits.
BBC Steak House seats _110
people at padded leather
booths and tables with pad-
ded leather seats ...Red tab-
lecloths are neatly folded for

customer use on tables with
glass tops over white tablec-
loths ... The lounge area is
separated from the dining
room and its dance floor sur-
rounded by tables.
The BBC decor is one of in-
timate coziness ... with
Tiffany-style lamp shades,
pictures galore on walls,
brass rails separating the
booths, recessed ceiling light-
ing, mirrored backwall be-
hind the long bar, etc.
Remodeling will be done
soon with walls mirrored and
an atmosphere that according
to description gives electrify-
ing promise.
A new menu has been
made ... with minimal
changes from the former one
... featuring fish, poultry,
seafood, prime rib of beef and
of course, steaks ... Don't
look for an extensive menu
selection ... there's just
enough to make a good choice
... from appetizers to soups
to entrees ... at reasonable
prices.

But the main attractions
other than The Loving Cup
are service, soft intimacy and
much conviviality ... Don't
count out the food, though, if
also going there to dine ...
The menu no doubt has what
you want ... and I found the
BBC kitchen preparation to
be as you like it ... Much of
its wine list is by both glass
or bottle ... , and not re-
stricted to just a few choices
as at so many other spots.
BBC Steak House took over
Dec. 1, 1986 ... A sign is
there ... but a newer and
more elaborate one is yet to
come.
It is open Mondays through
Fridays, 12 noon to 2 a.m. ..
and Saturdays 6 p.m. to 2
a.m.
From the moment a valet
parking gent takes your car
or you choose to park it your-
self and enter BBC Steak
House, the difference from
before is most prevalent ...
The reason is quite evident
why BBC has suddenly be-
come another good place to go
for choice dining and dancing
pleasure ... It's discovery
just might be the place you've
been looking for.
NEW
EMPLOYEE
DEPT. ... at Excalibur on
Franklin Rd. and Northwest-
ern Hwy ... Robert Davis,
evening manager ... and
Mark Palinko, waitperson
Both are formerly of Golden
Mushroom.
NAME TAPAROONEY'S
on 14 Mile Rd. and Crooks
will soon be changed to
Mitchell's Food & Spirits ...
It's now owned by Paul
Mitchell of the Mitch's fam-
ily, with son Greg and
daughter Lucy ... They've
already taken over and folks
are starting to rave again
about the baby back bar-b-q
ribs ... Paul was reared in
