them in 1977.
In many ways, Blood Libel
seems to represent nothing so
much as a campaign biography,
complete with allusions to the
inevitability of Sharon's as-
cent to the top post in Israel.
Dan denies that this was his
intent, but he is not timid
about expanding on Sharon's
suitability for the job.
The question of whether
Blood Libel constitutes ac-
curate history will no doubt
be argued with enthusiasm
by the Sharon forces and their
equally vehement opponents.
When the book is published
in Israel, it will probably not
change any minds, but it will
certainly liven up the book
review columns and op-ed
pages for many months.
But Dan's book is a clear
personal statement that
reflects some of the turbulent
forces that are shaping the
Israel of tomorrow. Dan is a
man who takes political op-
position in very personal
terms. "In the last day of the
trial," he says, "some happy
political rivals came and said,
`Well, Uri Dan, so what do
you say now?' They were hap-
py that the defense minister
of the Jews, of Israel, was
lying on the pavement,
bleeding. They were happy. I
tell them what I told them in
1973, when he was forced to
leave the army: those who re-
ject him as chief of staff will
have him as Defense Minister
— and those who reject him
as defense minister will have
him as prime minister. Half of
it happened already."
