much more than meeting
people."
As a kind of fringe benefit,
the Singers believe that the
chavurah program helps
strengthen the synagogue.
"People come into the
synagogue and wonder how
they will meet anyone," ac-
cording to Ruthellen. "But as
a part of a subgroup — the
chavurah — they can come
together with other chavurot
and find a wonderful way of
opening the door to the
synagogue."
The Singers say that the
steering committee first
envisioned the chavurot as a
vehicle for families with
young children. During the
planning stages, however,
they were surprised that
there was a great deal of
interest from families with
older children.

Older children, pre-bar
mitzvah and teens, are a
growing focus of JEFF plan-
ning. Although its first ef-
forts were aimed primarily at
families with pre-schoolers, a
real need has been demon-
strated for programming for
families with older children.
Among the programs already
under way is one sponsored
by Temple Israel at Butzel
Conference Center in Orton-
ville. Intended for fifth
graders and their families,
the "Free To Be" weekend re-
treat includes a Shabbat cel-
ebration, an oneg with
storytelling and singing and
a maccabiah with sports ac-
tivities. It all provides a way
to celebrate Jewishly, as a
family, in a relaxed, natural
setting.

Based on JEFF's success,
what does the future hold?
Ask Appelman and she'll tell
you about her "wish list." It
includes such things as a
Jewish parenting center, ex-
pansion of the overall pro-
gram to include all the
synagogues that are in-
terested in taking part, a
series of home video learning
activities and, more family
camping experiences built
around inter-generational ex-
periences and single-parent
weekends.
According to lay leaders
and professionals alike, the
possibilities and impact are
limitless. And just in case
you are still wondering if it is
worth all the time and effort
involved, just ask those who
have already been touched by
JEFF:
"You have to make a spe-
cial effort or there will be a
breakdown of the ties that
bind Our people together,"
says participant Joel New-
man. "If everybody spent that
kind of time with their kids
in quality programs, there'd
be a lot less problems. We'd
all have a better feeling of
Jewishness." [I]
