For all occasions Nation-Wide Delivery South Africa Reacts to Israel Don't Forget to Order For All Your Special Occasions Johannesburg (JTA) — Is- rael's decision last month to curtail its relations with South Africa, including a halt to new military con- tracts, was greeted more in sorrow than anger in Johannesburg. Strong re- sentment was expressed against the United States which President P.W. Botha accused of "bullying" Israel into reducing ties with South Africa. Anti-Semitic backlash, most of it from anonymous quarters, was reported in the daily press. The South African Jewish Board of De- puties issued a careful statement, noting that Israel "takes decisions having re- gard to the necessity to pro- tect its own sovereign na- tional interests...In this re- gard it is noted that Israel has been subjected to sig- nificant pressures from the United States." 772-4350 RODNICK BROS. Coetzee, the outspoken anti-apartheid South African author, warned that break- ing ties with the Pretoria regime would be counter- productive for countries hop- ing to use their influence to bring about changes in South Africa. Coetzee, who was awarded the Jerusalem Prize at the International Book Fair in Jerusalem April 10, said at a press conference that he believed that in general, foreign countries should try to influence South African policies while retaining con- tacts with the country. He said he was not sufficiently informed to comment on Is- rael's relations with South Africa.
