A spokesman for the UIA, which channels monies col- lected from the UJA to be spent in Israel, told The Jewish News the problem is not the I.R.S. but the State Department, which defines Israel by its pre-1967 war borders. "It could endanger our tax-exempt status," said the UIA spokesman. "The State Department policy isn't written in stone, it's more of an intepretation than a direct ruling, but we have been and continue to be very cautious about it." Jews Aided Chicago Mayor When Mayor Harold Wash- ington made his triumphant re-election victory speech April 7, more than a score of Jewish Chicagoans were among the VIPs invited to join him on the stage of Navy Pier Auditorium. For the first time since the days of the late legendary Col. Jack Arvey, who deliv- • ered crucial Jewish votes from the West Side area, Chicago Jews were publicly organized to aid a mayoral candidate. The Jewish Voters for a United Chicago were first or- ganized to aid Washington in the hotly contested Demo- cratic Party primary, against popular former Mayor Jane Byrne. A New York Times post-election analysis of the primary results showed that 47 percent of the Jewish vot- ers supported Washington in his narrow victory, contrast- ing to 10 percent of the white Catholics, 25 percent of white Protestants, and 90 percent of Blacks who voted for him. Matzah Given To Homeless Washington (JTA) — The unleavened bread which links Passover and Easter,as it symbolizes both the Jewish exodus from Egypt and the Last Supper, took on • a mod- ern binding. Several truckloads of mat- zah originally bound for Jews in the Soviet Union will in- stead be distributed by a local church. "With a little imagination you can see the connection," said Rev. John Steinbruck of Luther Place Memorial Church, who began distribut- ing the matzah right after conducting Easter services. "If the matzah can't be used by Jews leaving for an Exodus out of Egypt which in the contemporary meaning is the Soviet Union, why not let it be used .. by the home- less?" Ltd.
