perform .in concert at the
Maple/Drake Jewish Com-
munity Center during the
week-long celebration of Is-
rael Independency Day, Yovel
will perform at 7:30 p.m. May
6.
The Center is sponsoring
the activities with the Jewish
Welfare Federation • and
Jewish Community Council.
Yovel recorded his first solo
album in 1974. In recent
years, he has recorded two
more albums and presented
concerts in Israel, the U.S.
and Europe.
Tickets are available in
advance at the Center, or the
Jewish Community Council
office (room 1) at United He-
brew Schools.
Independence Day fes-
tivities begin May 3 at 2
p.m., with a Knowledge of Is-
rael Quiz Bowl for 6th and
7th graders. Students repre-
senting 15 Jewish day and
afternoon schools will par-
ticipate.
At 2:30 p.m., children age
ten and under can take part
in an Israeli obstacle course
in the Center lobby, or enter
an El Al airplane-making
contest.
Adults can learn tradi-
tional folk dances from Uri
Segal, and thete will be
plenty of Israeli food on hand.
The Center also will host a

special showing of a film On
the history of Zionism, Pillars
of Fire. The one-hour seg-
ment will be shown at 2 and
3 p.m.
Senator Carl Levin will be
doing a special briefing for
Detroit area Jewish youth on
Israel, the Middle East, and
other contemporary issues at
4 p.m. Participating organ-
izations are the B'nai B'rith
Youth Organization, Michi-
gan State Temple Youth, Na-
tional Conference of
Synagogue Youth, and
United Synagogue Youth:

Auschwitz Display

"Auschwitz: A Crime
Against Mankind," an exhibi-
tion of photographs, personal
belongings and artwork from
the death camp, will be on
display at the Wayne State
University Community Arts
Gallery, May 17-29.
A number of public and
private schools have ex-
pressed interest in the ex-
hibition as an educational
tool, to futher students'
knowledge of the Holocaust.
In addition, churches, Sunday
schools ad Jewish community
organizations have also
booked time. Groups from as
far away as Flint and
Kalamazoo are scheduled to
participate.
Specially trained guides
will be on hand to give group
tours of the exhibit, and will
answer any questions that
arise.
Under the joint sponsorship
of the Jewish Welfare Feder-
ation, the Jewish Community
Council and the Holocaust
Memorial Center, the exhibi-
tion is under the national
sponsorship of the United
Jewish Appeal.
Cooperating local organiza-

tions are The Ecumenical In-
stitute for Jewish-Christian
Studies and the Polish
American Congress, Michi-
gan division. This is the only
Michigan appearance of the
exhibition, on loan from the
Auschwitz State Museum in
Poland, during its two-year
tour of major cities in the
United States.
