THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

557-8899

ever that three major Anglo-
Jewish newspapers got to-
gether in a sales seminar
meeting ... Was held re-
cently at the beautiful
12,000-acre Seven Springs
Mountain Resort about 80
miles outside of Pittsburgh
. Detroit Jewish News, Bal-
timore Jewish Times and

Cleveland Jewish News.

Folks from Baltimore and
Cleveland drove ... while
those from Detroit went via
US Air to Pittsburgh Inter-
national Airport and a long
ride to the Seven Springs re-
sort with its ski runs, indoor
swimming pool, indoor minia-
ture golf, bowling alleys,
cocktail lounges, restaurants,
etc.
Rick Nessel and Randy
Marcuson almost didn't make
it ... They were late and
local contingent drove to air-
port with Detroit Jewish
News associate publisher Ar-
thur Horwitz behind the
wheel ... Rick and Randy
came to the office minutes
after we left and hurriedly
grabbed a cab to Metropoli-
tan Airport ... Surprise
party that weekend was for
Lauri Biafore's father, so she
couldn't go.
That night was probably
one of the finest Friday eve-
ning seafood buffets we've
seen in many a moon ...
$23.75 and everything im-
aginable in the all-you-can-
eat lineup of goodies ... Mar-
ion Goodman of The Cleve-
land Jewish News was smart
... she didn't load herself up
with the "everyday" stuff .
Marion swallowed six lobster
halves.
Seminar speaker David
Orlow brought out .a few
enlightening points ... but it
was the weekend together-
ness of these three fine news-
papers that made this a most
enjoyable short trip.
Chuck Buerger, publisher
of the Baltimore Jewish
Times and Detroit Jewish
News, Art Horwitz, associate
publisher of • the Detroit
Jewish News, and his assis-
tant Lisa Kamil, Harry
Scharf general manager of
the Cleveland Jewish News,
Sylvia Stafford, office ad-
ministrator and assistant to
Chuck at the Baltimore
Jewish Times, and Marcia
Sollish, sales manager of the

Cleveland Jewish News,

joined their staffs for the in-
teresting weekend.
All wore different colored
badges with their names and
affiliation ... Saturday morn-
ing was another all-you-can-
eat brunch ... so was the af-
ternoon ... Folks up there
get mighty hungry after ski-
ing ... Most of the guys 'n
gals passed on the Saturday
night brunch ... Chuck and
son Andy had pizza in their
suite ... and the poker game

Harry drooled for since com-
ing never came off.
It was sitdown, relaxing
dining time for a group of us
who went to the La Sorgente
Bavarian-style gourmet re-
staurant with its French
touch ... We were going to
take a Seven Springs bus, but
Arnie Greenspun of the Bal-
timore Jewish Times pointed
and said, "It's just over there"
... It was over there alright,
but not by a long shot as
close as Arnie said ... We
walked and walked and
walked ... until a grounds
policeman came to our rescue
. He called ahead for a bus
to come pick us up ... and
the "Over There Arnie" trek
was ended ... Rick, Randy,
Lisa and Art went bowling so
I was the only representative
of the Detroit Jewish News

. . . Baltimore Jewish Times

had Sonny Greenfeld, Gene
Berger and Ellen Levy ...
Cleveland Jewish News re-
presentation was by Marcia
Sollish, Reva Weissman, Ron
Greenbaum and Marion
Goodman . . . What did Mar-
ion eat?, ... lobster tails, of
course!
The seminar turned out to
be a weekend of enjoyable to-
so very
getherness
healthy in the exchange of
ideas ... I somehow got the
feeling that this was really
Chuck Buerger's idea in the
first place.

TOBY AND MANNY
CHUDNOW find it hard to

believe that when they
started Better Business
Equipment 30 years ago they
would become so specialized
in serving national president-
ial conventions ... Their
Ferndale spot has already
had three workings with
Time magazine, Washington
Post and other media ...
They will probably be taking
number four ... having al-
ready been contacted by
Time, Washington Post and

Knight-Ridder Newspapers.

Two of the four Chudnow
sons, Edward and Michael,
are now in the business ...
and the family has opened a
second locale on Ten Mile
east of Orchard Lake Rd.
