Righteous Gentile Cited At Memorial Academy Shaarit Haplaytah Organ- ization — Survivors of the Nazi Genocide — will pay tribute to the Righteous Gen- tiles and Nazi victims at the annual Holocaust Memorial Academy April 26 at 1 p.m. at the main Jewish Commu- nity Center, in cooperation with the Holocaust Memorial Center, Jewish Community Council, Greater Detroit In- terfaith Round Table of the National Conference of Chris- tians and Jews, the Ecumeni- cal Institute for Jewish- Christian Studies and Jewish Center. Dr. John J. Mames, chair- man, department of oral his- tory and Holocaust studies, will pay tribute to the Right- eous Gentiles. This year the late Oscar Schindler, a German-Catholic indus- trialist, who single-handedly saved at least 1,300 Jews of Cracow (Poland) from exter- mination will be remem- bered. Throughout the war years Schindler (no relation to Gen. Schindler of Armaments In- spectorate) spent a fortune on bribes to the SS and high ranking Nazi officials to keep his workers from deportation to Auschwitz and to secure for them food and drugs on the black market. At a great personal risk he applied var- ious ingenious skillful and daring techniquess to divert the doomed victims from gas chambers. A place on "Schin- dler's List" meant at least hope for survival. Mr. Schindler was honored by the government of Israel (Yad Vashem) as the "Right- eous among the Nations of Schindler spent a fortune on bribes to the SS .. . the World." Pope Paul VI and the Vatican awarded Schin- dler the "Order of Saint Syl- vester." In England, the Mar- tin Buber Humanitarian Award was presented to him. The United States recognized him with a special citation. His wish to be buried in Jerusalem was fulfilled. To perpetuate his memory, the Shaarit Haplaytah and the Michigan Region of American Red Magen David for Israel will sponsor through Magen David Adorn an Oscar Schindler Paramedics Training Schol- arship. The community is invited. N
