The Association for
Retarded Citizens wants
to make sure that if you
plan to have children,
they turn out to be
happy, healthy children.
So we suggest you
follow four basic rules
before you conceive a
child:
1. Follow habits of
proper nutrition.
2. Avoid alcohol and
tobacco.
3. Beware of too much
exposure to X rays.
4. Ask your doctor
about genetic
counseling if mental
retardation of
unknown cause has
occurred in your
families.

unit of ARC, the

Citizens.

Film Shows Dietrich
In Her Alluring Prime
I'm glad that Marlene
Dietrich chose not to appear
on camera in the new
documentary, Marlene (not
rated).
I'd rather remember the
exotic, sultry Marlene from
Destry Rides Again, or the
mature Marlene from Witness
for the Prosecution, or the
glamourous, grandmother on
stage in pink sequins, bathed
in pink light, enchanting us
with Lili Marlene.
I really don't want to see
how time has ravaged this
goddess. For goddess she is. A
mythic character.
Dietrich, Garbo — they are
doing it right. They let us
remember the alluring image
they created on the big light
show.
I find it painful to see
Bette Davis or Katharine
Hepburn today. I don't want
to see how age and illness
have withered these icons. It
reminds me of my own mor-
tality.
So once again I have to
disagree with so many of our
critics who fault Marlene be-
cause the subject is not seen
as she is today, only heard on
audio tape. I think the film is
better for the very reason
that only her voice is heard.
of course, there are plenty
of film clips and newsreels of
a younger Dietrich to satisfy
the most avid admirer.
I have always been fasci-
nated by Dietrich and I abso-
lutely loved this portrait. For
here you see not only the
image but the shrewd, sar-
donic, witty and brilliant
woman who created that im-
age.
There is little that is sen-
timental or middle-brow
about Dietrich. She can't be
bothered to see her old films,
"It's boring." And she dismis-
ses so much in these films as
"kitsch," "sentimental rub-
bish," even "dreck."
Speaking sometimes in
German, sometimes in
English, Dietrich candidly
assesses her career, her work,
her co-workers.
On Emil Jannings in the
classic "Blue Angel": "A ter-
rible ham."
On Spencer Tracy: "An in-
credible, wonderful man."
On Orson Welles: "A God
we should worship."
Dietrich always knew what
she was doing and con-
sciously worked to create the
persona she projected to the
world. Rosemary Clooney told
me a story of being out to
dinner with Dietrich in Hol-
lywood when Clooney was
making a film. In the middle
of the dinner, she suddenly
felt Dietrich handing her a

comb under the table and
whispering to her, "Comb
your hair. You are a star.
You must look like a star.
Always."
Maximilian Schell does a
wonderfully imaginative job
of putting together archival
footage, contemporary repor-
tage and new audio tape.
This is a revealing and touch-
ing tribute that illustrates
vividly all that it takes to be-
come a true world-class
legend like Marlene.
