such a massacre would be
impossible in our modern
world.
Not only does a second
Holocaust seem impossible in
the world of today, it is be-
ginning to seem more and
more unbelievable in retros-
pect that it happened at all.
A dismayingly large group of
people now believes that the
Holocaust never took place,
and the numbers are grow-
ing. It is very possible that
within 100 years, after all
survivors and children of
survivors are gone, the true
scope of the Holocaust will be
all but forgotten.
How can this be? How can
people deny the existence of a
witnessed and documented
historical occurrence? For
God's sake, it was only 45
years ago, less than a single
lifetime. How can people dis-
believe in something so re-
cent?
It is easy to group all these
non-believers into the cate-
gory of "anti-Semites," but
the label isn't necessarily
correct. While many of these
nay-sayers are anti-Jewish,
many others of them are
simply misguided, and bear
the Jewish people no emnity.
What is their motive for try-
ing to deny the truth?
The simple answer is that
people do not want to re-
member the Holocaust.
People would like to believe
that the world is incapable of
such atrocities, that human
beings are civilized beyond
that level. But history tells
us that it just isn't so. Ger-
many was considered one of
the cultural centers of the
world before World War II
and the Holocaust; yet it
happened there so quickly
that we still do not under-
stand precisely how it oc-
curred.
What this must teach us is
that no matter how cultured
and civilized we may think
-we are, the human race still
has a great deal of progress
to make. By learning about
the Holocaust, we can see
that it could and did happen
in Germany, and that it can
happen again.
In today's world, a second
Holocaust is not unlikely.
The apartheid policies of
South Africa, the oppression
practiced by the Soviet re-
gime and the recent genocide
in Cambodia all demonstrate
that we are still not com-
pletely free of these evils. We
must stand ready to fight
tyranny wherever it appears,
so that someday the idea of a
second Holocaust will be
truly impossible. But only by
studying the mistakes of the
past can we recognize them
when they are made again.
That is what we mean by "to
prevent it from happening
again;" that is why we study
the Holocaust today.
