People view Jews as rich brats from Long Island whose parents spoil them." The J.A.P. (Jewish American Princess) is the most widespread Jewish stereotype. Nevertheless, these prob- lems are minute compared to the problems that black stu- dents face on the predomin- antly white campus. Says Rabbi Robert Levy of Ann Arbor's Temple Beth Emeth: "When someone spray-paints graffiti on a synagogue wall everyone screams 'anti-Semitism,' but the fact that blacks continue to be economically and educa- tionally deprived and that their collective poverty and living conditions continue to worsen rather than to im- prove, that is completely ig- nored. Racism in this country is a much more serious prob- lem than anti-Semitism and the Jewish community shares responsibility in perpetuating racist myths and attitudes." When asked, U of M stu- dents deny having any racist feelings, but say that their parents and friends do. Jewish racism is, perhaps, more subtle and less overt than painting graffiti or dis- tributing hate literature. More often, it takes the form of calling the black maid "the shvartze" or assuming that every black male is a crimi- nal and selling one's home when the neighborhood be- comes integrated. So, despite the prominent role Jewish activists and leaders played during the civil rights era, prejudice still exists in the Jewish commu- nity. When U of M students were asked what they thought of the recent racist incidents on campus, most re- sponded that they thought too much publicity was given to them. As one student put it: "This race problem has been blown out of proportion and the black students are alienating themselves more by the way they are going about trying to get results. I have put up with anti- Semitism all my life and would be naive to think it will stop." Southfield Student Wins U-M Prize Daniel Ginis of Southfield has been awarded The Uni- versity of Michigan Student Recognition Award "for excel- lence in service and leader- ship in extracurricular activi- ties." Ginis, a senior at U-M re- ceived the award for his work as editor of Consider, a cam- pus weekly; and for his active role on the B'nai B'rith Hillel Governing Board. $10. 95 any plain leather or suede waist length jacket $5.00 OFF any other leather or suede garment (with this ad) 47 Years of Confidence . . . we're three generations of Hago- KLEEN ALL LEATHERS 16431 Schoolcraft Detroit, MI 48227 838-3666 pian's . . . the original.
