Jews Fear
Backlash In
Pollard Case
New York (JTA) — By a
margin of 54 to 34 percent,
American Jews believe the
Pollard spy case and Israel's
involvement in the Iran arms
sale will cause an increase in
anti-Semitism, according to a
New York Times/CBS poll
published in the New York
Times last Sunday.
But non-Jews, by a margin
of 59 to 34 percent, do not
believe this. Moreover, the
poll showed only 18 percent of
American non-Jews were
aware that Pollard spied for
Israel — 13 percent thought
he spied for the Soviet Union.
By contrast, three-fifths of
American Jews knew he spied
for Israel.
Among the Jewish respon-
dants, 34 percent said they
were angered by what Pollard
did and 27 percent said they
were embarrased. Only 13
percent sympathized with
him. But 40 percent of Jews
compared with 15 percent of
non-Jews said his sentence
was too harsh.

Bonds Leaders
Hear Nissim
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's
relations with the United
States, the issue of Soviet
Jews, Middle East peace and
economic recovery were sub-
jects covered at the week-long
Israel Bond Leadership Con-
ference which closed in
Jerusalem Sunday. Of most
direct interest to the partici-
pants was the economy.
Finance Minister Moshe
Nissim described it to the
delegates as emerging from
"deep crisis, characterized by
soaring inflation, with Israel
unable to adjust monetary
and employment levels to
changing times." But the
far-reaching economic pro-
gram introduced July 1,
1985, has done much to
stabilize prices and improve
Israel's balance of payments,
Nissim said.
