New York (JTA) — Even as
the Crown Heights communi-
ty of Chabad Lubavitch
hasidim in Brooklyn prepared
for Passover, ethnic tensions
were rising in this mixed com-
munity of Hasidic Jews and
Blacks. Last Saturday, an
estimated 500 Black pro-
testers marched through the
streets of this neighborhood
that is home to the world
headquarters of the Luba-
vitch movement, as well as to
other Hasidic groups, and to
a large Black community, too.
With 2,000 New York police
officers lining the route and a
police helicopter flying above,
the demonstrators staged a
noisy but peaceful march in
response to what they claim
is police bias toward the
Jewish community, and
focused specifically on the
February 26 firebombing of a
Black woman's house, in
which an unidentified witness
claimed to have seen two men
dressed in what looked like
Hasidic garb fleeing the
scene.
The Jewish community, on
the other hand, has protested
the deaths of two hasidim in
what appear to have been
ethnically-motivated inci-
dents.
The march, occurring on
Shabbat, stopped briefly at
the 770 Eastern Parkway
Lubavitch headquarters,
where the Lubavitcher Rebbe,
Menachem Schneerson,
celebrating his 85th birthday,
was addressing a crowd
reported to number 10,000.
The demonstrators were kept
a block away from the build-
ing. No incidents or arrests
were reported.

Alzado Tough
Against Cults

Los Angeles — When Lyle
Alzado, the fearsome defensive
end of the Los Angeles Raiders
professional football team, an-
nounced his retirement last
year, many stories surfaced
about his plans. Some thought
he ought to act as a replace-
ment for King Kong.
A_ recent announcement
makes more sense. Alzado has
become honorary chairman of
the advertising campaign by
Jews for Judaism.
This international organiza-
tion is a Jewish communal re-
sponse to the multi-million-
dollar attack by missionaries
who seek to lure Jews to Chris-
tianity and cults of varying
credibility through their utili-
zation of hard-hitting advertis-
ing campaigns in print media.
