Three students from Hillel
Day School have been named
local winners in the 18th an-
nual America and Me Essay
Contest, sponsored by Farm
Bureau Insurance Group. All
three are students in Mrs.
Ronna Rosenbaum's eighth
grade English class.
The three students, who
earned the first, second and
third place awards for their
school, are Michal Dorfman,
first; Ami Abramson, second;
and Jonathan Rosenbaum,
third. All three received
award certificates for their
achievement. As the school's
first place winner, Michal
Dorfman's name will also be
engraved on a plaque for
permanent display in the
school.
Michal's first place essay
now advances to the state
level competition, from which
the top ten essays in Michi-
gan will be seledted.
A team of finalist judges
that includes Gov. James
Blanchard and Lt. Gov.
Martha Griffiths will deter-
mine the top statewide win-
ners.
The topic of the 1986-87
contest was "How I Can Con-
tribute To America's Future."

At MSTY's (Michigan State
Temple Youth) recent second
regional board meeting, the
general board ratified several
new constitutional changes,
including the establishment
of a new MSTY executive
board position.
At this year's election
weekend, MSTY will hold its
first election of the MSTY
liaison vice president. This
new board member will be
liaison to MSTY's temple
youth groups.
Also at this meeting,
MSTY ratified life member-
ship for Mr. and Mrs. Arthur
Baker, Mr. and Mrs. Gerald
Israel, Rabbi Norman T.
Roman and Rabbi Harold S.
Loss.
Youth Shabbat
At Beth Achim
Cong. Beth Achim Shabbat
Services will be led by the
members of the Youth
Groups on Saturday in honor
of Shabbat Hanoar (Youth
Sabbath). The service will
begin at 8:45 a.m. and will be
followed by a special kiddush
sponsored by the sisterhood
and synagogue in honor of
the youth. Everyone is in-
