past decade, acknowledges
Clary, television has been fas-
cinated with the subject.
Just look at what is coming
up on television, he says. In
War and Remembrance, next
year's sequel to Winds of War,
"a huge portion of the film is
set in Auschwitz. A movie on
Beate Klarsfeld is coming out.
There is so much, so much."
But there is so much ground
to cover. It is ground that Clary
has traveled over, from Blec-
hhammer to Gross-Rosen to .. .
"You knew you couldn't sur-
vive by yourself. You had to
find friends; you just could not
be a loner."
Clary indeed made friends.
At a reunion of survivors in
Philadelphia several years
ago, Clary met up with those
who had shared the same fate
as he at a time when Robert
Clary was better known as
Robert Max Widerman and
nicknamed "Dede" in an
environment called Blec-
hhammer.
"We all remember the same
things, the marches the
cruelty. The amazing thing is
that we are also able to laugh,"
recalled Clary.
And laugh is what Clary
does well despite the past sor-
row. In the past, he has had to
laugh off the critics, who had
wondered hOw a television
show such as Hogan's Heroes
could make Nazis straight
men. Making light of the
Holocaust seemed anathema to
those critics, but even Hogan's
Heroes, Clary has said, served
a role.
Clary is not about to forget
his other role in life, however,
and is inspired by the fact that
Elie Wiesel, "the conscience of
the Holocaust," just captured
the Nobel Peace Prize.
"We must continue talking,"
says Clary, and never forget.
