Anti-Tutu
Report Hit

New York — Theodore El-
lenoff, president of the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee, termed
"baseless and inflammatory" a
recent press report attributing
strongly anti-Semitic remarks
to Archbishop Desmond Tutu
of South Africa.
The report, carried by a
number of Anglo-Jewish and
general newspapers, alleges
that Archbishop Tutu told a
closed meeting of the Board of
Deputies of South African
Jews in 1984 that "Jews were
the biggest exploiters of
blacks, so they must suffer,"
and that "there will be no sym-
pathy for the Jews when the
blacks take over." The report
said that the board failed to
publicize these remarks "out of
fear that Tutu would become
even more anti-Jewish."
AJC's international rela-
tions department contacted by
telephone leaders of the South
African Jewish community.
Ellenoff declared that both
South African Jewish spokes-
men and Archbishop Tutu
have categorically denied
these charges. In light of these
denials, Ellenoff cautioned
that, "the crisis afflicting
South Africa is a natural
breeding ground for sen-
sationalistic and false reports
about prominent political fig-
ures therexIn addition to dis-
torting th truth, such reports
confuse and inflame debate
about South Africa at a time
when clear-headed thinking is
required from all those who
oppose apartheid and support
non-violent democratic
change."

Gung-ho Types
Injured More

Jerusalem — It is precisely
the "gung-ho" fighter type
among soldiers who is most
likely to suffer leg-stress frac-
tures in military training, said
a participant in the third an-
nual Jerusalem Symposium on
Sports Injuries, held recently
at the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem.
The athletic-type of trainee
believes that pain is an integ-
ral part of training and there-
fore is unlikely to complain
until he has actually suffered
stress fractures that require
treatment, said Dr. Thomas J.
Scully, chief of orthopaedics/
rehabilitation at Beaumont
Army Medical Center in El
Paso, Tex. The more sensitive
type, however, who is not pa-
rticularly excited about train-
ing, is more likely to complain
earlier about pains and there-
fore will not reach the stage of
stress fracture, he said.
