But those who sign the
petitions and give the money
are not only the super-
Zionists who regard Pollard
as a "hero" and feel Israel has
no reason for regrets. Side by
side with the outrage over the
harsh sentences imposed on
the Pollards — Jonathan was
sentenced to life; Anne to five
years — there is a deep sense
of collective guilt about the
treatment Israel itself has
dealt the couple, who are
perceived to have been brutal-
ly exploited and then ruth-
lessly discarded. "Israel's con-
duct with regard to the
Pollards has been morally in-
defensible," according to
political scientist Allan
Shapiro, who occupies a
center-left position in the
Israeli political arena. "It
lacks even the cynical justi-
fication of being politically
expedient.
"Israel got Pollard into this
mess, so why the bashfulness
about standing behind him,
at the very minimum to the
extent of financing the legal
defense?

It is naive to imagine that
United States aid to Israel
was motivated by pure
altruism, he says. Israel gives
back to the United States far
more than it receives. "But so
long as Israel acts like a beg-
gar, without dignity, Israel
will be treated with con-
tempt."
Out in the streets, the
grass-roots of Israeli society
discovered the Pollard cause
with a vengeance.
Apparently spontaneous
organizations set up stalls in
downtown Jerusalem and lel
Aviv, urging citizens to sign
petitions in support of the
Pollards and to donate to
their defense fund.
Thousands of dollars have
already reportedly been col-
lected to help defray the
astronomical legal costs —
estimated to be in the region
of $400,000 — that have
