Bookstores also offer hag- gadahs written for children and students. There are also numerous "coffee table" hag- gadahs, such as the "Sarajevo Haggadah," published by Ktav Publishing House Inc., consisting of reproductions of medieval texts. Others have texts illustrated by such famous contemporary artists as Ben Shahn and Arthur Szyk. Szyk's is one of the most popular art/gift haggadahs. It is available in hard cover, or with a decorated "silver" cover inset with "jewels." The jewel-like tones of the illustra- tions and the elaborate borders and friezes of flora and fauna, and traditional text recall the illuminated- manuscript haggadahs. The artist's satiric style, par- ticularly in his depiction of "The Four Sons," places Szyk's artwork in the 20th century. Here are some of the popu- lar paperback haggadahs: "Gates of Freedom: A Passover Haggadah," by Chaim Stern. Visual inter- pretations by Todd Siler. Rossel Books, Chappaqua, N.Y. This is a haggadah for Reform Jews, with readings from traditional and secular sources. English text with Hebrew, and some translitera- tion. Full-color, Impression- ist-style illustrations. Carol Cott Gross is a writer who lives in East Northport, N.Y. Arabs Mark Land Day Jerusalem (JTA) — Land Day was observed peacefully by Israel's 700,000 Arabs March 30. But sporadic vio- lence, school and shop clo- sures in the West Bank and Gaza Strip demonstrated the contrasting moods and prop- ensities of Palestinian Arabs who are citizens of Israel and those in the administered territories. Land- Day originated in 1976 as a mass protest against the confiscation of Arab lands in Galilee to build Jewish settlements. What began as a general strike de- generated into violent demonstrations. Arab youths confronted soldiers and bor- der police who gunned down six of them. The day has been one of mourning and protest by Palestinian Arabs ever since. Video Seder Delray Beach, Fla. (JTA) — It won't help you wash the dishes or find the afikoman, but Rabbi Joseph Langer of Temple Beth Israel has created a video tape that can assist with the rest of the seder. On the video, the host of the Tree of Life cable televi- sion Jewish talk show in south Florida explains how and why to hold a Seder. Song lyrics flash across the screen and transliteration is provided for the prayers. y \
