people, has to "impose and
enforce whatever penalties it
can to express its displeasure.
Saying we're displeased does
have its effect. We must not
give honor to wrongdoers,
must voice our opposition to
the wrong done and must
work to strengthen our com-
munity so that others don't
falter. If the temptation is
there and the enforcement is
loose, it will happen more
often. Others will find temp-
tation too great."
As for the individuals
themselves, they too, Siegel
said, have to do teshuva, re-
pent. But, he said, that is
easier for Boesky than it is
for Pollard. "With Boesky,
where money is involved,
restitution is possible. He can
somehow or other give it
back. Pollard, however, com-
mitted treason. You can't real-
ly make up for that:'
Once having looked back,
however, the Jewish com-
munity must then look
ahead, said Siegel. And must
look to trying to be more
moral and live, yes, by a
higher standard than others.
"One of the bases of our
religion is that we are the
Chosen People. We are the
standard against which
others are measured."
And because that's so,
Siegel said, we have to look
inside of ourselves to see
what went wrong. "We can't
just forgive and forget. There
should be rabbinical sermons
and organizational declara-
tions. We must face up to the
fact that Jews behaved very
badly and have tarnished
Judaism."
Siegel said that should go
on until Yom Kippur, in about
six months. Sermons on that
day should focus on Boesky
and Pollard, he said. And
then the focus of the Jewish
community should be turned
elsewhere.
"Soul searching needs to be
done. But once these stories
are out of the news, it should
stop, unless we again become
smug or self-satisfied. We
need to remember, after all,
we are just human beings,
that we will be tempted and
that we will do wrong things.
We don't need to have con-
tinuous breast-beating."
Some perspective, he said,
is called for.
"All you have to do is read
the prophets to see that Jews
have always been sinful. We
are human beings and so we
do wrong, sometimes trivial
wrong, sometimes serious.
That's really no surprise.
Since we hold ourselves to
such high standards, some of
us are bound to occasionally
fall short."
