Our missionaries will be touring your area of the country soon to present Christ in the Passover. /— ' They will display the customary items of a traditional Jewish Passover and describe the historical and spiritual significance of each. The ceremony and pageantry of the Passover celebration illustrate the central theme, "Christ, the Lamb of God which takes away the sin of the world." The climax of the presentation is the portrayal of Communion as Jesus celebrated it with his disciples in the upper room. It's exciting to piece together all the events which led to Jesus' words when he took the cup after the Passover supper and said, 'This is the New Covenant in my blood...." Jews for Jesus "is not ex- pressing the Christian love we are used to," said Ronnie Schreiber, who told The Jewish News that Jews for Jesus leader Mitch Glaser tried to intimidate him by threatening a lawsuit if Schreiber's group pickets the area churches. Schreiber, Iry Wengrow of the Troy Jewish Congrega- tion, and Robert Arcand of the Greater Detroit Interfaith Roundtable, have contacted the churches in Troy, Plymouth, Bloomfield Hills, Clawson, Warren, Fraser, Grosse Pointe Woods, Yp- silanti, Flat Rock, and Mt. Clemens, expressing their concern over the perform- ances and asking the church pastors to consider programs in the future that "help your, parishioners understand other faiths." Wengrow's letter stated that Jews for Jesus "con- tinues to pose a threat to the longstanding good relation- ship between our faiths in our area. Representations made by Jews for Jesus in furtherance of their pro- selytizing and fundraising ac- tivities are offensive to the Jewish community, not representative of Judaism, and destructive of the fellow- ship which Christian and Jewish groups strive so hard to achieve. "The Jews for Jesus doc- trine is an admixture of rab- binic Judaism with Christian tenets. Their theology ne- gates the uniqueness, and denies the legitimacy of both our faiths. Their misrep- resentations and outright un- truths about both Jewish and Christian belief systems shoud be offensive to Chris- tians as well as Jews. "In - particular, their Passover presentation dis- plays half-truths in such a manner so as to falsely show a connective relationship be- tween Judaism and Chris- tianity through the Passover holiday ..." The letters were initiated by the Jewish Community Council. Ronnie Schreiber said he is forming a local Jews for Jews chapter to combat the Jews for Jesus. But he emphasized that his picketing efforts will be a peaceful, informational campaign. "We will only have a few people at any church. We do not want a confronta- tion."
