Oak Park Eruv Marks Anniversary

The Oak Park community
eruv has been in operation
for a full year. Under the
rabbinic guidance of Young
Israel Rabbi, Reuven Drucker
and the lay leadership of Dr.
Jeffrey Last and Alex
Saltsman, the eruv has been
functional all but one Shab-
bat during the past year.
This operational rate exceeds
that of nearly all other eru-
vin in the country, according
to Rabbi Drucker.
The eruv is a structure
which allows Jews to carry in
the public thoroughfare with-
out violating the halachic
prohibition against carrying
on Shabbat. Essentially the
eruv transforms a public do-
main into a private domain
(in which carrying is permit-
ted).

Much of the structure of
the eruv involves the desig-
nation of existing wires and
utility poles to form a
perimeter around where
nearly all the observant Jews
of Oak Park and east South-
field reside. (There is another
eruv in the neighborhood of
the Young Israel of South-
field).

Rabbi Reuven Drucker
As a result of the eruv a
number of Shabbat activities
are now possible within the
commuity. Those individuals
unable to walk to the
synagogue without the aid of
a wheelchair or cane can now
attend services. Similarly,
young children and infants in
need of a stroller can be
brought to the synagogue.
These same families can now
visit friends and go for walks
as a family unit. In addition,
individuals may carry books
to each others' homes or to

the synagogue for the pur-
pose of study on Shabbat. The
shaing of meals on Shabbat
also becomes much easier. A
number of families have or
are in the process of moving
within the area to take ad-
vantage of the eruv.
Treasurer Saltsman reports
that last year's expenses to-
taled nearly $8,500. This in-
cluded funds for weekly in-
spection of the integrity of
the eruv, periodic repairs, in-
surance, communication to
the community and the
maintenance of the eruv hot-
line, 968-ERUV. The hotline
can be called each Friday af-
ternoon to inform the com-
munity of the status of the
eruv. The line is capable of
handling 300 calls per hour.
President Last announces ar-
rangements have been made
with a local pharmacy to in-
sure that those in need of
medications on Shabbat may
be able to obtain them with-
out the necessity of transfer-
ring money or driving to the
pharmacy.
At present, donations by
eruv members provide the
only income for the eruv.
