Jewishness must be affirmed

that's why none of us has

maybe I should follow up

thoughtfully.

britot for such families last
year, a "miniscule" part of
his business. Many have
since taken their sons to the
mikveh as promised; one
mother is enrolled in conver-

"I wouldn't want to close
the doors on these people," he
says with conviction. "It's
important to hold on as much

This is the final profile
in a series highlighting
some of the ways in which
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion's Allied Jewish Cam-
paign helps people of all
ages.
Chana Zoberman, age
81. She's frail and alone,
the last of her family still
living in Bucharest,
Romania. A Holocaust
survivor, Chana Zoberman
spends many long hours in
her tiny apartment, think-
ing about the past or just
staring ahead. But once a
day, six days a week, she
becomes animated and
smiling, showing a little of
the old spirit that has
helped her survive. That's
when her Meals on Wheels
volunteers stop by to bring
her a hot meal, medicine
and the warmth of human
friendship.
On most days, the three
people can be found shar-
ing a funny story and
some conversation, ending
their visit with hugs and
handshakes. The two vis-
itors, both in their early
60s, say they enjoy seeing
Mrs. Zoberman and the
other people like her on
their route, because the
needs — and the apprecia-
tion — are so strong. Mrs.
Zoberman is one of 800
homebound elderly persons
in Bucharest who receive
kosher meals, medicine
and housekeeping help
through the Meals on
Wheels program of the
Federation of Jewish
Communities in Romania,
funded by the American
Jewish Joint Distribution
Committe. Sadly, her story
is not much different from
the other 3,000 elderly
persons throughout
Romania who receive
sustenance from 11 Meals
on Wheels kosher kitch-
ens. But while Mrs.
Zoberman's life is not
easy, she says she feels

fortunate to have such car-
ing friends to look after
her.

The agency. The Joint
Distribution Committee is
the overseas relief arm of
the American Jewish
community. JDC provides
welfare assistance, medical
and social services, care
for the aged, Jewish edu-
cation and other services
in 34 countries, ranging
from Eastern Europe to
South America to Israel.
In Eastern Europe alone,
150,000 people receive
kosher food, clothing, med-
ical care and winter grants
for heating fuel.
JDC receives funds from
the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign of Detroit's Jewish
Welfare Federation and
the campaigns of other
communities. Like the
local agencies that have
been profiled in the pre-
ceding weeks, JDC reaches
out to people from many
backgrounds with many
needs. It typifies how
Campaign contributions
translate into direct serv-
ice.
