Great News for the Oriental Rug Lover!

girls of his congregation re-
ceive Hebrew names in a
baby-naming ceremony, a rite
with "equal significance for
boys and girls."
Rabbi Wine performed such
a ceremony recently at the
home of Steve and Kathy
Kopitz, at which time Brad-
ley David received his grand-
father's Hebrew name.
"(Rabbi Wine) did a little
homily about rebirth, spring,
about the power of children
over adults," Kathy says.
"Bradley's the first child of
the next generation; it was
important to do the tradi-
tion."
She added that Bradley's
great-grandmother had ex-
pected a brit, but the
Kopitzes had their son cir-
cumcised in the hospital in-
stead. Kathy's labor was dif-
ficult, Steve explains. Brad-
ley was born premature. "We
were worried about bleeding."
If so, why have a circumci-
sion at all? The couple say
the option of not having a
circumcision was "out of the
question."
Even if there had been no
complications at the birth,
there would still have been
no brit. "I'm a believer in
modern medicine," Steve de-
clares. "It is not as simple a
surgery as we are led to be-
lieve." -
Kathy, who is not a Jew,
says their son will be bap-
tized a Christian as well.
"Our son will be raised both
ways," Steve adds. "We did a
lot of work on this before we
got married. At some point
the child will have to make
his own decision."
Until that point — which
all children must reach —
the question remains: Who is
responsible for seeing to it
that our next generation is
Jewish?
"The parents are always
responsible for their chil-
dren," Rabbi Zachariash an-
swers. "If your child isn't
vaccinated, whose fault is it?
We provide the clinic, but the
parent must bring the child."
Cantor Greenbaum favors
"some kind of board of rab-
bis" to oversee the brit and
mikveh conversion process.
"There should be some sort of
overseeing body in the com-
munity."
A board of rabbis would be
untenable, Rabbi Zachariash
counters, because it could not
have any coercive powers.
"There is no religious
authority in America," an-
other mohel adds. "Everyone
can do what he pleases.
You're free to be as unreli-
gious as you want."
Even without a board of
rabbis, Cantor Greenbaum
says, there are certain
checkpoints in Jewish life —
entering Hebrew school, bar
mitzvah and marriage, for
example — where a person's

The Hagopian family loves rugs, too. Months ago the Hagopian's packed their bags and set
out to far flung destinations, battling crowds, traffic, dust, heavy schedules (and the revenge)
to consider, compare, critique, cajole and make deals (we're best at that). We're back with rugs
from Egypt, Turkey, Afghanistan ... room sized Silks and Persian design rugs from China and
a cache of Art Deco designs in fresh new colors from New York. Meanwhile at the store, we
were probing every nook and cranny and have come up with some bargain priced Clear-A-Ways.
We're bursting with new and exciting merchandise and are anxious to show you. Why the flurry
of activity? It's our most nostalgic event at prices to cause celebration. It's our 48th
Anniversary and an Oriental Rug Lovers dream. We're excited. Can you blame us?
