THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS

David Mintz and Henry Yee of Shanghai Shapiro's.*

THE EXPRESSION "Ex-
perience is the best teacher"
holds true in many phases of
life ... but is important only
if taken advantage of.
A prime example is the re-
staurant business ... When
the former Encore dining spot
opened ... and close ... on
Orchard Lake Road in the
West Bloomfield Plaza, there
were valuable educational
lessons that had been ob-
tained.
It is a very large gamble to
open a restaurant these days
... especially without having
restaurant experience ...
True, it can be learned, but
in the process customers
begin shying away and the
cash register doesn't ring
often enough to pay bills.
The Encore was a beautiful
spot .• .. Even other restaur-
ant owners who visited
exclaimed much awe at the
decor.
The bus stopped here ...
Service was poor and the food
mediocre at best.
Owner Bernie Mintz and
son David Mintz took it on
the chins and locked up.
Now they have returned for
a second chance ... with a
new name ... new concept
... new thoughts about food
and service ... and above all
a restaurant man of many
years' experience.
It's called Shanghai Shap-
iro's ... in a very interesting
and successfully-proven con-
cept that celebrates three
New Years ... Chinese,
Jewish and civil.
The new Shanghai Shap-
iro's is fun ... and when op-
erated properly promotes an
idea that merits attention.
Glass-covered tables and
booths are lined with news-
papers from Hong Kong and
Tel Aviv ... Musical selec-
tions are piped in from Israeli
and Chinese entertainers ...

Waiters dressed in karate
uniforms serve pastrami,
jumbo hot dogs, chopped live-
r,sandwiches, etc. in attrac-
tive Chinese bamboo steam-
ers.
Henry Yee, unofficial
mayor of Chinatown and
executive secretary of the
highly respected Chinese
Merchants Association here
for the past 20 years, has al-
ways enjoyed Jewish culture
and food ... In many ways,
they have similarities ...
After a trip to Toronto to
visit the very popular
Ginsburg & Wong's there, he
approached Bernie and David
with the concept for a joint
venture.
Henry has over 25 suc-
cessful years' experience in
the restaurant business .. .
David, 24, is a graduate in
marketing from University of
Michigan ... Thus developed
a team that has customer
satisfaction in the forefront of
their operation.
The large kitchen at Shan-
ghai Shapiro's is split 50-50
... half for deli preparation
with American cooks ... and
half for Chinese with two
New York-trained Chinese
chefs ... recommended by the
National headquarters there
of the Chinese Merchants
Association ... where Henry
went to obtain the finest
Oriental cooks he could.
One of the most popular
deli items on the menu is the
Shapiro's Favorite, a five-
ounce corned beef sandwich
(all are 5-ounces) with Swiss
cheese, cole slaw and Russian
dressing ... served on fresh
hand-sliced rye bread ...
David raves about the
Chinese Swallow's Nest,
pieces of slipper lobster, scal-
lops and chicken with as-
sorted Chinese vegetables ...
served in an edible "nest" ac-
tually 'made from Chinese
