Health Ministry has ordered
routine blood testing of preg-
nant woman in Israel for the
AIDS anti-bodies, it was an-
nounced last week.
Health Minister Shoshana
Arbeli-Almoslino has in-
structed her staff to prepare
and implement a program
that will test some 100,000
women a year while a Min-
istry team examines it legal,
ethical, budgetary and organ-
izational aspects. The Min-
istry has been routinely
testing pregnant women for
German measles for the past
five years, a disease which
can damage a fetus.
Pregnant women infected
with Acquired Immune Defi-
ciency Syndrome (AIDS)
virus can transmit the in-
variably fatal disease to the
embryo in womb or infect the
infant during delivery. If the
AIDS anti-bodies are present,
the woman will be urged to
terminate pregnancy.
Meanwhile, the Health
Ministry reported that 41
cases of AIDS have been
diagnosed in Israel since the
beginning of 1982. Only 12 of
the victims are alive. A large
percentage of the Israeli vic:
tims were infected abroad and
11 of those infected were non-
Israeli temporary visitors, the
Ministry said.
There are believed to be 201
AIDS carriers in Israel. All
donated blood.

New York (JTA) — Mayor
Edward Koch of New York,
who is known to do almost
everything his own way, last
week unveiled the street sign
designating "David Ben-
Gurion Place" here while
standing in a truck-crane.
Koch had torn the covering
of the sign at East 43rd
Street between Vanderbilt
and Madison Avenues, neces-
sitating the crane. His eleva-
tion was met by applause
from the hundreds of spec-
tators there to honor the
centennial of the birth of
Israel's founding Prime
Minister.
The square is at the site of
the old Biltmore Hotel, where
45 years ago Ben-Gurion and
other Zionist leaders formal-
ly established the goal of the
Jewish State of Israel during
the Biltmore Conference.
