It was the last trial of its kind and scope, and the longest in German history. No filming or tape recording is allowed in a German Courtroom. So Fechner, a highly respected television director in the Federal Republic of Germany, gathered out-of-court testimony from many of the persons involved: the presiding judge, three public prosecutors, three investigating attorneys, an historian-expert, ten counsels for the defense, five defendants, thirty-one witnesses. Fechner worked a near miracle by getting the defendants to talk. During the five and one-half years of the trial they had remained silent, making use of their right to refuse to testify. But in the film, they speak.
