and mentally focus on one
peaceful word, thought, or
picture. Take yourself on a
short vacation to the beach
and when all other thoughts
disappear, return and arrive
well rested and with renewed
energy after five to ten min-
utes. This method may take
an hour to learn.
The third method, progress-
ive muscular relaxation, is a
three-step technique that
helps differentiate the feeling
of tension and relaxation.
A quick procedure is to sit
or lie down in a comfortable
position. Pull your toes back
toward your face and tighten
your shins. Hold this and feel
the tension for five to ten
seconds. Let go and relax for
20 to 30 seconds. Notice the
difference between tension
and relaxation. Repeat this
again. Now point your toes
downward as you tighten
calves, thighs and buttocks.
Hold for five to ten seconds.
Let go and relax for 20 to 30
seconds. Repeat again. Take
a deep breath in and arch
your back slightly while
pressing your stomach out.
Let go and relax. Feel the dif-
ference. Repeat. Hunch your
shoulders forward and up to
your ears. At the same time,
wrinkle up the muscles of
your face like a prune. Hold.
Let go and relax.
