We Are One

The following profile by
the Jewish Welfare Federa-
tion is part of a series on
the people who benefit from
the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign.
Drs. Bela and Michael
Chopp and daughters.
They seem to have blended
it all beautifully — profes-
sional commitment, family
life, and Jewish spirit. Dr.
Bela Chopp is associate di-
rector of Oakland Univer-
sity's psychology clinic; Dr.
Michael Chopp is director
of neurophysics at Henry
Ford Hospital; and daugh-
ters Debra, Sarah and
Melina are students at
Akiva Hebrew Day School
in Lathrup Village.
Since Bela and Michael
came from Orthodox
Jewish backgrounds and
also had achieved a high
degree of success profes-
sionally, they wanted their
daughters to attend a
school that would inte-
grate a love for Jewish life
with the larger world
around it. They believe
that Akiva's blend of
Judaic and secular studies
and its mix of students
from many segments of
Orthodox and non-
Orthodox life have done
this.
In addition to an excel-
lent teaching staff, homey
atmosphere, and joy of
learning, Michael says
that "there is a real em-
phasis on moral values, a
feeling that belonging to a
people is more important
than material things."
Adds Bela, "It's important
for women to maintain
traditional values, but also
to go out in the world and
realize their potential;
Akiva encourages this
self-development." And
rather than being isolated,

The Chopp Family

the Chopps believe that
their daughters — who
attend secular summer
programs — have made
many kinds of friends and
adjusted better in the
"larger world" because of
their strong Jewish iden-
tity.

The school. Akiva He-
brew Day School offers a
double curriculum of
Judaic and secular studies
to students in pre-
kindergarten through 12th
grades. Incuded are a
learning resource center
for children with special
needs, and a year-in-Israel
program for high school

seniors.
Among the other Jewish
day schools in the met-
ropolitan area are Hillel
Day School in Farmington
Hills and Yeshivath Beth
Yehudah in Southfield and
Birmingham which, to-
gether with Akiva, serve
nearly 1,300 youngsters.
All three receive funding
from the Jewish Welfare
Federation's Allied Jewish
Campaign.
