Phyllis Zieve Friedman

Phyllis Zieve Friedman has
been named chairman of the
sixth annual film festival at
Cong. Shaarey Zedek.
The series opens with
Musical Passage at 8 p.m.
April 9 in the Morris Adler
Hall of the synagogue. This is
a feature-length documentary
which tells the story of the
Jews' struggle to leave Rus-
sia and to come to America
for freedom and expression of
their music.
A short spoof on the mak-
ing and eating of Chicken
Soup as a Jewish tradition
will also be shown on April 9.
Two recent and award-
winning documentaries of
Jewish life will be featured
on April 16. Number Our
Days is a portrait of a South-
ern California community of
Eastern European Jews who
sustain their culture in the
face of poverty and loneli-
ness. Number Our Days won
an Academy Award for best
documentary short in 1977.
The second feature on April
16, is In Her Own Time. Dr.
Barbara Meyerhoff, a Jewish
sociologist studied the Fair-
fax neighborhood in. Los
Angeles, where Jews from all
over the world settled.
The film was cited as an
American Film Festival
Finalist and a Cine Golden
Eagle winner. ,

Cong. Shaarey Zedek's Cul-
tural Commission. The festi-
val is produced by Phyllis
Zieve Friedman with commit-
tee members Richard
Cavaler, Lillian Chinitz and
Esther Greenhouse. Admis-
sion is free.
