right-wingers who think
• that Israel is America's major
"strategic asset" in the Mid-
dle East; liberals who see
Israel as a democracy; in tune
• with the American political -
tradition; tuid the American

It takes a unique kind of
self-destructive genius, to do
serious harm to all three of
these assets in a single act of
stupidity, but that is exactly
what those who chose to run
Jonathan Pollard as a spy
have achieved-
I know that the represen-
tatives in the United States of
Israel's government have
been busy' - sending home
assurances that the Pollard
affair is a ternpo rar /meshy;
problem. It is indeed to the m-
terest of their immediate
masters in the Israeli govern-

the real and continuing costs
of the Pollard affair. Israelis
