• was placed in a labor camp as
a little bo3i. In the years fol-
lowing, he was.transferred to
several concentration camps,
escaping Iroin a death march
shortly before the end of
World War II. After the war,
he came to Michigan and
went to work as a copyboy for
a Port Huron newspaper. He
noted that his life and that of
his younger sister were
touched by the support -of -
American Jews through the
United Jewish Appeal in the
.
1940s.
"We don't have to tell each
other what happened then,"
he' said to his audience, "but
life has been very, very good
to us here. We owe some-
thing, and as American Jews
we have to play a role in the
American Jewish community.
Michel 'said that Holocaust
survivor Emery Klein's De-
troit Campaign co-
chairmanship is a 'national
"first" for survivors, shared
only by San Francisco.
Klein noted that, as
' Oesident of the Hebrew Free
Loan Association, he has be-
come aware of the large
number of Detroiters requir-
ing Jewish community assis-
tance. The Jewish Family
Service estimates that more
than ten percent of the Jews
in Detroit are living at the
poverty level,he said.

invite, all 'who are hungry`to
join us at the seder - table. In-
dividually, we cannot'do that
