She may be off to or planning a math- ematics conference, ice skat- ing, singing with the Oak Park Civic Chorus, going to a singles activity or working on a ceramics project. Hechler, 32, of Southfield, a teacher in the Detroit Pub- lic Schools, is very happy with her lifestyle because it provides her with the free- dom to participate in all kinds of activities and to travel. "I'm my own boss. I can come and go as I please. I can make my own plans. I have nobody to account for. I'm very independent and I run and I do and I go. I have a lot of friends that I make plans with or I just do things on my own." In addition to her job, Hechler is involved in many groups and volunteer proj- ects. She is affiliated with the Young Adult Encounter, a division of Jewish Marriage Encounter; volunteers for the Jewish Welfare Federation's Young Adult Division and Allied Jewish Campaign; is a member of Women's Ameri- can ORT; presents workshops for math teachers and is a proctor for math competi- tions. She also takes classes Y 80 Friday, March 27, 1987 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS dates. She called the experi- ence "scary," because unlike being fixed up with a blind date, there was no one to tell her about the potential date in advance. But, she admit- ted, she met a lot of men via the ads. On the topic of singles ac- tivities, Hechler recom- mended that organizations hold them on nights other than Saturdays. She said she felt the Yom Kippur night dance and the December party at the Jewish Commu- nity were the most successful. She also said the synagogues and temples should take a greater role in providing pro- gams for singles, and rotate the activities. A participant in the Shab- bat Dinner Club of the Com- munity Network for Jewish Singles, Hechler suggested that more dinners be held, but they should be separated by age groups. And what does Ellen Elissa Hechler prescibe for a happy single life? "To take a positive attitude and not to become desperate in a situa- tion (meeting Mr. or Miss Right) where they have no control, because it's fate. It really is. It's timing. I'm not going to say it's in the stars, but if it's meant to be it's to be. And always look the best that you can because you never know who or where you're going to meet some- one." ❑ Jill Margolick Mickey Shapiro 332-7863 661-8888 Call for Deliveries - 51, TYPEWRI R DOING MACHINE COPIER REPAIRS—OUR SPECIALTY I , I GREAT AMERICAN DESK SALE FACTORY BANKRUPT '4 9.95 5 20% TO 75% OFF T IBM'S $119.96 - -o .t 30 WOOD OFFICE DESKS & CREDENZAS $249.96 Reg. $900 m Eb• BRAND NEW IBM SELECTRIC III $495.00 co 0 • OFFICE PARTITIONING S49.96. A native Detroiter, Hechler holds a B.S. degree in educa- tion and M.Ed. degree in math from WSU. Eventually, she wants to become a teacher consultant. In her spare time, she does needlepoint, works in ceramics, plays guitar, sings, goes to dances, plays, movies and to cultural activities. She also likes to travel. One of her favorite projects is the annual Channel 56 au- ction. She has been involved in the auction for the past 12 years and this year is a board supervisor. Hechler sees her volunteer efforts as a contribution to the Jewish community. She figures she spends about a quarter of her spare time working on Jewish communal programs. Affable and personable, Hechler said she has no trou- ble making friends. "I'm very outgoing and I don't have a problem meeting people in a situation where there's a dance or a party."
